Concept Maps; Social Network Analysis!!

Tutor/Mentor Connection seeks to create a SNA application that enables us to demonstrate the various skills needed to achieve our mission, and the various people and networks who are working with us to achieve our mission. Below are two concept maps that illustrate this goal:

The Tutor/Mentor Institute is a "Learning organization". While we point to research being done by professionals, we don't see a lot of market research intended to help us understand what T/M programs operate in Chicago, where they are, who they serve, what challenges they face, etc. This is "market research". We have been doing some of this work but with very limited resources. Through the new structure we hope to generate investment and partnership from more ways, to do more of the learning that needs to be done to support the growth of tutor/mentor programs in more places.

In 1993 when the T/MC was created, it's first goal was to survey Chicago to learn what organizations were offering various forms of tutoring/mentoring. In 1994, the question became "How do we share this information and help people understand where different programs are located?" Every year since 1994 the T/MC has worked to update its database of programs and keep the information current. In late 2006 a new version of the Program Locator made it possible for programs to add or edit their own program information. In 2008 we added the interactive map to the Program Locator web site making it possible for people to first look at all of the places where T/M programs were needed.

The Power of Networks

1st of

4 Strategies

What we need for 1st strategy?

For 1st strategy,

1. We share knowledge.

2. We maintain a web library.

3. Identified by knowledge

we collect.

We need much more help in

collecting and organizing knowledge.

  • Collect info about T/M programs.
  • Build&Maintain library.
  • Share info via maps
  • Understand impact & who is helping
  • Conduct network analysis

2. Build&Maintain library

4. Understand impact

& who is helping

Support OHATS

3. Share info via maps

When the Tutor/Mentor Institute was first created it was intended to become a library and learning curriculum that anyone could use to expand their knowledge of problems and how others were solving those programs. Such understanding would support decisions at all levels and sectors of society, leading to a convergence of resources to help high-quality, mentor rich programs be available during non-school hours in a growing number of high poverty areas.

This page is an outline created to show the type of information we wanted to include in this library. Since 1998 when this was first created many power points, PDF essays and animations have already been created. However, these have not been turned into curriculum nor published as books, videos or training manuals.

If we can find manpower to do this we can help more people understand and use the information while also generating on-going revenue to support our thinking and innovation.

OHATS (Organizational History and Tracking System) is an organized and systematic way for a group, program or network of community organizations to record, observe, analyze and report contributions and key events that influence progress toward its mission and goals. For example, one can use OHATS to track accomplishments and results, organizational procedures, lessons and best practices, critical external events that influence the work, and service delivery details and statistics.

The idea behind OHATS is simple and proven throughout history: if a community group tracks actions, events, lessons and results important to their success then they can learn from them and be more successful.

Since 2000 the Tutor/Mentor Connection has been developing a documentation system to create a better understanding of what it is accomplishing, and a tool for process improvement.

The T/MC use of Geographic Information Systems demonstrates.

Our web sites where we provide information on why tutor/mentor programs are needed and a program locator database, that shows which programs are in what neighborhoods.

By creating an internet based program locator, we enable students, parents, business leaders, as well as youth in our own Tutor/Mentor program, and through our conferences and other networking to help draw attention to the tutor/mentor programs in their own zip code.
