Levels of Structural Organization

Chemical Level

At this level, atoms combine to form molecules such as water or even proteins.

Atoms

Form

Molecules

These molecules will come together in a specific way to make organelles, the basic component of cells.

Cellular Level

These cells each have a unique shape depending on what function they perform in the body.

Molecules

Form

Cells

Some of the simplest creatures are made of one cell but more complex beings, such as humans, contain more cells then is possible to count.

Tissue Level

Cells

Tissues are groups of cells that have a common function.

Form

Tissue

There are four types of tissue: epitheliem, muscle, connective, and nervous. Each type has a specific role in the body.

Organ Level

An organ is a structure in the body made up of at least two types of tissue.

Tissue

Organs

Organs perform complex functions, such as the heart pumping blood to the rest of the body.

Organs

Organ System

Form

An organ system is a group of organs working together to accomplish a common purpose.

Organ Systems

Organs Systems

For example, blood vessels and the heart work togehter to make sure that blood is circulated continuously to carry nutrients and oxygen to body cells.

Organismal Level

Organisms

The organismal level is the sum of all the structural level working together to promote life. It is the highest level of organization.
