In 2009 a series of prank phone calls

were made to hotels, restaurants, and

fast food chains. The caller pretended

to be in some position of authority

and then convinced the person on the

line to commit various acts of

vandalism.

What does this illustrate about obedience?

We are taught to listen to authority.

Here's another example:

The Milgram Shock Experiment (1961)

Dr. Stanley Milgram conducted experiments to determine the

willingness of participants to obey the orders of an authority

figure who instructed them to do things that conflicted with

their own judgement or morals.

Why do we follow the rules?

The Experiment

Three people participate in the experiment - the

experimenter, the teacher, and the learner. Only

the teacher is unaware of the actual experiment.

The teacher is instructed to give a small electrical

shock to the learner for each incorrect answer. As

the experiment progresses, the shock level increases.

The Results

65% of participants (24/40) administered the maximum 450 watt shock

though many showed extreme discomfort and concern for the situation.
