I remember when the gymnastics equipement arrived at our elementary school. The students were all excited to learn a different sport, however this activity is very dependent on safety and self awareness. In my first gymnastics class, my teacher had us take out all of the mats and we learned the basics of summersaults and how to safely roll. We were not allowed to touch equipment until we could fall and roll. The way our teacher assessed our ability to do this was he created an obstacle course with signs which told us which move we had to do to pass the station. I loved the activity even though I was not very sucessful because we went from gynnstics class to secret agent training.
The most important concern is SAFETY. Sometimes it can be hard to keep students safe when you're only one teacher with 25 students. A system that works to help prevent injury involves placing students into groups of 3: one trying the activity, and the other two acting as safety. This teaches leadership, safety, awareness, and encourages healthy relationshps through peer support. Every activity should begin with an awareness of how the equipmeent can help train, but possible injuries if the activity is not taken seriously.
With the new BC curriculum, one of the main Core Competencies is the development of the Personal and Social self.
Our goal is to create an environment where students feel safe around each other to experiment and try new ideas without fearing peer judment or failure. This can be done through community encouragement and support. Encourage students to help eachother develop their physical literacy which builds relationships in the community.
Even though gymnastics can represent a large hazard in terms of safety, it is important to foster creativity in movement.
When we begin to express creativity in movement, we learn to move and exercise every msucle with purpose. This helps students develop agility and balance, both physically and in terms of how they process a situation.
