Dubai’s green buildings project about to be launched is considered important in reducing carbon emissions and in enhancing indoor environment and air.
Manufacturing of a tonne of Portland cement results in the emission of 1.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 164kg of dust. The eco-friendly concrete will absorb, rather than release, 5% of the worlds carbon dioxide.
The launch comes following a pilot phase of hybrid taxis that took place between 2008 and 2011, involving 10 vehicles. RTA has donated 20 Toyota
Camry's that will consume 33% less fuel and will produce 33% less carbon dioxide emissions.
The building plans call for a 1 million square foot plant, with solar panels to be produced as big as 5.7sqm. Similar plants will be built in China, Mexico and Bulgaria. The announcement was made during the Green Dubai World Forum in 2008.
Eco-friendly concrete is now mandatory in Dubai. The decision will be mandatory from April 1, 2015.
Toyota Camry cabs now consume a third (1/3) less fuel and produce a third (1/3) less corbon emissions.
These also reduce noise pollurion by a third (1/3).
Dubai Municipality has embarked on an initiative called “Green Roofs” that aims to encourage people to grow plants on their rooftops. Municipality buildings will be the first to test out the concept.
Dubai is planning to set up the region’s largest solar energy manufacturing plant. They are expected to start producing by the last quarter in 2010, and will manufacture photovoltaic panels that can generate 130 megawatts of power annually.
