There are sites that are similar to WASP, but do not have all the features available through our site. These sites include:
- RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network)
- MESA (Moving to End Sexual Assault)
- No More (a movement committed to removing stigma from rape and sexual assault)
Our Website
Those statistics are chilling. We thought of a way to help make the aftermath and recovery part of such a heinous ordeal less lonely. Our site is a social media site that connects victims with a wide support network and provides them with comfort in such a horrible situation.
A Few Statistics
- According to RAINN, 44% of all rape victims are under 18 years of age. And 80% of all American victims are under 30 years.
- There is an average of 293,000 instances of sexual assault each year.
- 4 out of 5 of victims know their attacker and almost half of them are friends.
- The vast majority of sexual assaults and rapes are not reported and most (98%) perpetrators escape justice.

Why we chose this
A Few More
There is an underlying societal concept that perpetuates misconceptions about sexual assault and rape. That cultural phenomenon is called rape culture. It allows for doubt to be placed on victims and undue sympathy to the perpetrators.

- However, 30% of rape victims had experienced at least one major depressive episode in their lifetimes, and 21% of all rape victims were experiencing a major depressive episode at the time of assessment.
- 13.4 times more likely to have two or more major alcohol problems.
- 26 times more likely to have two or more major serious drug abuse problems
- Rape victims were 4.1 times more likely than non-crime victims to have contemplated suicide.
- Rape victims were 13 times more likely than non-crime victims to have attempted suicide.
W.A.S.P. versus The Others
Our App
WASP is different than the other services in a couple of ways.
- RAINN offers a hotline service for online communications, but only with the trained professionals. WASP connects victims with one another to provide an entire network.
- MESA is a great organization, but is primarily concerned with the prevention of sexual assault, while WASP is more responsive. MESA is also a service that serves two counties in Colorado. WASP is a national service.
- NO MORE is a program that gets a lot of publicity and notoriety, but it does not offer a service that victims can do.
Our app is an extension of the website. We realized that cell phones are more accessible, so it was equally important to have a phone and a website. Also, extending the site to an app provides our services to cover more age groups, such as teenagers or children who are more familiar and comfortable with their phones.
