Quantifiers

Leonardo Ballesteros

Camilo Herrera

a quantifier is a Word that you use to describe the amount of something you have, wich can be countable or uncountable,

There are certain quantifiers for each one and some of them can be used for both cases

Countable ones

How to use it: it expresses a high amount; it is used more than anything in negative sentences and questions with the countable name in plural. It can be used in affirmative sentences but it’s not so common, instead of that we used another quantifier, such as “a lot”

There are not many tourists.

Some

How to use it: it means an undefined but limited amount. It is used for both, countable names in plural and countable names in singular. It is used in affirmative sentences and questions, in negative sentences we use “Any” instead

Few/ A few

How to use it: it expresses a small number, there is two ways to describe a small number: the decision of using few or a few depends on the opinion you have about the amount, few expresses it in a negative way and a few does it in a positive way

example

Do you have a few dollars?

the countless

A lot/lots of

How to use it: It expresses a big amount. We don’t use it for doing questions. It can be used with countable and uncountable names

He has a lot of books

How to use it: unlike “no” none can be used with no need of a name, it is the final word of a sentence as the answer to a question about amounts

Little/ a Little

We have little time.

Much

How to use it: just like “many” it expresses a big amount of something, the difference with the first one is that we only use it with uncountable names in singular, and again, just like many, can be used preceded by the expressions too or so to express the idea of a excessive amount or an opinion about the amount.

example

We have much to do!

Any

How to use it: it is used the same way as some but in negative sentences and questions

I do not have any cats.

No/ None

How to use them: they express a small amount and only used with uncountable names, the decision of using little or a little reflects your opinion on the amount, if you use a little, it means a positive opinion, on the other hand if you use little that means you are not happy with the amount
