Ed Sheeran "Small Bump"
There is only one location in this video, it takes place in a hospital. This video is very nontraditional as music videos tend to have 3-4 locations in them and with each location a change of clothes goes with it, but in this video he only hs the one set of clothes. The location has been chosen carefully and it does relate to the song. The song is about his baby being born, so the one location helps the narrative because it tells the audience that waiting to become a Dad can take a very long time.
The video is continuity editing, this is because we see the story in chronological order. However we see time passing but it has been done so that its still continuity editing, its almost like an ellipses.
There are not many props in the music video, but we start with a shot of a clock, this straight away tells the audience that we are waiting and this gives the viewer a little insight of what the song will be about. We then get a shot of a needle disposal box, this again points out that we are in a hospital giving the audience some knowledge on the narrative.
There is a very strong narrative in this video, the audience can understand it clearly and the lyrics of the song help the viewer in understanding it. Ed is waiting in a hospital and his wife is pregnant he is waiting for his wife, but it is taking a very long time. This is shown by the people fading out, this is telling the audience that Ed has been sitting there for so long that all of these people have been to see the doctor and have finished with what they had to do. It is a smart way to show that time is passing with out cutting and it is done very well as it gets the message across clearly.
As I said Ed only wears one set of clothes and these clothes are what you would expect from this type of genre. He has trainers on with blue jeans and a blue hoodie as well. The clothes are very fashionable at the moment and his helps his audience connect with him. If they seem him dressed how he is then they will look up to him and will want to dress like him. The clothes would be seen as cool and hip by the target audience which is exactly what he would want us to think.
The music video doesn't have many shots, it only has five shots in total with is very strange for a music video. There are still many different shot types used, we start with a close up of a clock and it is at a low angle which could be telling us that someone is looking up at it. We then cut to a mid shot of hospital beds, this sets the location for the music video. Two more shots to help set the location for the audience and then we start with a very slow long shot track in of the artist. As the camera tracks in we pass a mid shot and close up of the artist lip syncing. We then start to track out in the same shot. This shot lasts the rest of the music video making it a very unique video.
There are not many effects in the video, the main one being cross dissolves, we see the people fading away to show the audience that time is passing and these people are also in slow motion, this gives it a strange effect as if time is passing but it is taking a long time for time to pass.
James Blunt "1973"
There are not many props in the video, but the main one that is, is the litter on the floor. This prop is showing the audience that over the time the street has become littered with all this rubbish and things have changed for the worse. The other props are a disco ball and a camper van which is what we expect to see from the time era.
There are many shot types in the video, with the main ones being the close ups of the lip syncing, the mid shots and long shots of James performing. There are also camera movements, we see a tilt up and track in at the same time at one point in the video, this makes it interesting for the audience.
There are two main locations for this video. They both take part on the street, but one is in 1973 and the other is in the present. As we go through the video we change from past and present but we are on the same street which changes to show us what has happened to it in the years. The other locations are shops and discos from 1973, which show the audience what 1973 use to look like.
Its continuity editing but it is cross cutting between the past and present. We see the cutting between 1973 and now but the audience don't really see the cuts because they are very soft with fades and cross dissolves.
The clothes that James wears in the video he wears for both the present and 1973, and this is telling the audience that although the time has change and the place he is still the same and nothing about him has changed. Then the clothes we see in 1973 are very different with bright coloured shirts and dresses what we would expect from the 70's.
This also has a very strong narrative in it. James meet Simona in 1973 and he is remembering this when he walks down the same street. He is getting flash backs of when he first met her and he is talking about him and her together and how he wants it back.
There aren't many effects in the music video, the main effect used would be the orange filter used other the 1973 shots, this gives it that older feel to it and also helps show the audience that it is in the past and not the present. Slow motion is also used along with cross dissolves which make the transitions from the years.
Mumford and Sons "The Cave"
We see close ups of lip syncing, we see the band together but then single shots of each member singing. This allows the audience to see who they are because they are not as well known as they could be. We also see tracks out and in to make the video interesting for the viewers.
The Script "For the First Time"
We start with a shot of a girl writing a letter to her Mum and Dad, she is telling them how she misses them and that she is okay. And then the two of them want to get back together but they can't because it is two hard for them, although she has a broken heart and he is drinking to solve the problem the two just can't get back together.
Concept and Narrative
The music video is showing the audience that James is missing his girlfriend and what they had together and he want it back. She is also feeling the same and is missing him but they aren't getting back together.
Continuity/Montage
Cinematography
Effects
The editing used is montage as we are cross cutting between James and his ex-girlfriend and how they miss each other, but there is also some continuity as the storyline doesn't jump around to much and the audience can make sense of what is happening in the video.
There are some effects in the music video, but the main ones are slow motion. This helps the audience because the slow motion can help set the mood to a slow, sad mood. The other effects are filters which also help change the mood to sad, and fades are used to make the editing soft which helps slow the editing down.
There are a lot of close ups used in the music video for both lip syncing and performing. We also see mid shots of performing, there are some long shots used but not many. The audience like to see close ups of lip syncing because they can see what is happening in the shot where as if it was in a long shot they wouldn't be able to see it.
Location
The main locations for this music video are a bedroom which tell the audience that it could be about a relationship, a park/field which is used, it is very abstract but the audience can connect the the locations too the songs. The third location is a new house which it looks like the couple have brought as there first house. This tells the audience a little more about the song.
James Blunt "Good Bye My Lover"
Clothes
Props
There are not many props in the video, the main one is a piano which we see him playing. This shows the audience that he can also play the piano and sing, this helps promote him as a piano player and as a singer.
We see similar clothes in this video to the other videos in the same genre. We see jeans and indie t-shirts. This is what the audience are expecting from these type genre music videos. It makes the audience relate to the video because the clothing is in fashion at the moment.

Cinematography
Location
The main props in the music video are mostly instruments. We see guitars, drums and microphones which the audience would expect to see in this song. We also see a postcard at the begging which helps the audience understand more about the storyline of the video and the lyrics.
The main shots in the music video are the close ups of the lip syncing. This is showing the audience the facial expressions of the artist whilst he is singing. It helps show the audience the passion he has for the girl he is singing about. There are also mid and long shots of the artist performing to help the narrative of the video. Tracks and tilts are also used to make the viewers more interested and to keep them watching the video.
There are three main locations in the video, the first is in a bedroom. This location helps tell the audience that the video could be about love and relationship. The second and third locations were on the street and in a studio. The street is the main location were most of the video takes place, this location helps the audience understand the song and the studio is used so that they can get better shots of the band as the can light it better etc.
Concept and Narrative
Clothes
The main clothes in the music video are worn by the focus character. He is wearing indie clothing, things such as leather jackets, jeans and hats. These clothes are all in fashion at the moment which make the audience like the video. This type of clothing also matches the type of music as the audience can relate the two together.
Effects
There are not many effects in the video, but the main ones are filters over shots which help set the mood for the audience, overlays and flares are also used in the video which makes it more interesting for the audience to watch.
Continuity/Montage
Most of the music video is continuity editing, as we see the story of the two characters but as we go on, we start to bits from the past, which shows the audience a little bit more of the story and what has happened between the two in the past. This then cuts back to the present where the audience see what is happening with the two now in the present day.
Continuity/Montage
The video is continuity editing as once the band members have given there instruments over the band drive about on there bikes singing this song until they finish. However, it is also montage as we cut away from the story to the instruments.
Effects
Location
There is barely any effects in this video but there is slow motion used on some shots, this helps set the pace for the video because it is quite a slow song, but there is also flares and filters used other some shots.
This video has more location then the last two but it still doesn't have a lot. We start on beach in an Asian country, which doesn't give much away about the song and the narrative. The second location is on the road and the band members are riding there bikes across this Asian country.
Clothes
Concept and Narrative
The band are very indie, and wear folk indie clothing, we see them wearing hats, chinos, shirts and smart shoes. This costume suits the the genre because the genre is very folk indie itself. We also see some locals to the area in a uniform, which could be an army uniform or it could be something that there band wears. It is not what we would expect to see in this genre.
The narrative of this video isn't as strong as the last to videos but there is still a slight narrative which starts with the band members giving their instruments to the uniform men. They then play the instruments while the band sing and ride the bikes around the country.
Props
Cinematography
There aren't many props in the video, but there are motor bikes which the band members ride and sing at the same time. These are local bikes that they are riding as we wouldn't see these types of bikes in the U.K. Then we see the instruments used in the song, these instruments would be expect and they are a convention of the genre.
