Dear Diary

The Mid -Years

I almost didn't recognize my friend! He has been gone for so long! I am filled with joy. I invited my friend to play, but he said he was too busy. He said he wanted a wife and children, and would need a house. I couldn't give him a house, but I offered my branches. My friend cut off my branches and seemed very happy, so I was happy.

Dear Diary

I am feeling a little sad today. It's been awhile since I last saw my friend. I wonder how he's doing. I hope he visits me soon!

Dear Diary

I haven't seen my friend lately. Only a few times over the years. I miss him. He's much older now - I guess about fifteen. I miss the days where he would visit me everyday.

Dear Diary

Oh, I am so happy! My friend came to visit! I was so excited! I asked him if he wanted to play or climb my trunk like we used to do. My friend said he was too old to play. He has a girlfriend now and needs money. I didn't have any money, but I offered him my apples. I told him to take my apples and sell them in the city. He was happy, so I was happy!

Dear Diary

My friend came back! We had so much fun today! My friend swung from my branches and we played hide and go seek. We had such a good time that I didn't want the day to end.

Dear Diary

It's been an incredible few months that I haven't had time to write. My friend and I have spent many days together. We play, eat apples and sometimes my friend takes naps in my shade. I have never been happier.

My friend has been gone for so long. I can barely remember what he looks like. Then out of the blue my friend shows up! I am so happy now! I wanted to play, but my friend said he was too old and sad to play. He wanted a boat to sail away. I offered my trunk and he accepted. He cut down my trunk , made a boat and sailed away. I wonder if I will ever see my friend again.

Dear Diary

My friend came back and I was so excited! I felt bad that I had nothing to offer my friend. My friend said that was okay - he didn't need much. He was just looking for a quiet place to sit and rest. Well I thought happily, I have the perfect place for you - my stump! I invited my friend to sit and rest. He did and I was happy again!

My Final Reflection

Dear Diary

I met a friend today - a little boy. He must be about five years old. We had so much fun. He gathered my leaves and played king of the forest. I laughed when he climbed up my trunk. I sure hope I get to see him again soon!

My friends don't understand how I can be happy. They felt my friend took advantage of me over the years. They would point out that my friend was rude for not saying thank you or that my friend never offered me anything. I told them that I don't give gifts to be recognized (although a thank you would be a polite thing to do). I like to do nice things and it feels good to be able to give - that's what makes me happy!
