BATTLE OF GONZALES

TIME AND LOCATION

  • The Battle of Gonzales took place in Gonzales, Texas, near San Antonio, at the edge of the Guadalupe River

  • The battle began and ended the same day: October 2, 1835

  • The battle only lasted a few hours.

WHO FOUGHT IN THE BATTLE

  • The battle was fought between rebellious Texan settlers against Mexican Army troops

  • The Texan settlers won the battle when the Mexican troops retreated because they were outnumbered and outgunned

REASON

  • The battle was fought because the Mexican government wanted to take back a cannon they gave the Texan settlers in 1831

  • The Mexican government did not want the Texan settlers armed because they had heard of rebellions against Mexican laws
  • The commanders of the battle were Francisco de Castaneda (from Mexico) and 100 soldiers. Castaneda was told to avoid confrontation because Mexico did not want to start a war

  • John Henry Moore (Texas commander) and the Texans were fighting to keep their cannon and to keep their constitution
