New France: A Royal Colony

When the French and Aboriginal alliance was destroyed by weapons alcohol, disease and forced religion, because they had an interest of expanding the fur trade business.

King Louis the 14th of France, did not want to loose control of Samuel De Champlains colony of New france on the banks of the St. Lawrence river in present-day Quebec

So he took control by making it a Royal Colony. King Louis was an monarch with unlimited power over anyone.

King Louis of France appointed 3 important officials to manage and direct his Royal Colony of New France namely: Comte De Frontenac as Governor General, Francois da Laval as Bishop and Jean Talon as bishop

Official Responsibilities

The Governor General represented king Louis and his absolute authority in New France.

The Bishop was head of the Catholic Church, schools, missionaries, and hospitals in New France.

The lntendant managed the day-to-day activities of the colony, including finance.

King Louis sent young women known as " Les filles du roi" the king's daughters to marry and populate the Royal Colony of New France.

Seigneurial system

Land in the Colony of New France was divided into long strips that ran from the shores of the St. Lawrence RIver back into forested wilderness.

Food

The people of New France had to produce as much of their own food as possible. Many sources of food and ways preserving food were learned from the first people. New france ate a lot of meat such as cattle and pigs, and from the area's wildlife such as birds, fish, moose, deer, rabbits and porcupines. Eels were caught in baskets in the river and salted, smoked or dried in there own gardens. Habitants made whole-weat bread from the weat that they grew on their farms and ground at the mill. The people of New France had to learn how to preserve food so they would have something to eat when it was the winter months.

Clothing

The early years of New France clothing was made of animal hides of from woven linen of hemp clothing was limed with leather or fur warmth. When the habitants begin to raise sheep, the women spun the wool and wove cloth. Woolen underclothes kept people warm in the winter and absorbed perspiration ration in summer.

Religious Role

One of the seigneur duties was to provide his habitants with a church. These churches were usually small wooden or stone buildings. Each area, or parish, was also supposed to have its ow priest. Often there were not enough priests so one priest would have to travel from parish to parish. The priests performed many services for the people:

  • Spiritual service-celebrated mass, heard confessions, baptized babies, performed marriages and funerals.
  • legal service-recorded business transactions drew up marriage contracts, drew up wills.
  • Personal service-provided the lastest news and gossip from other parishes
