What is a fossil?

Most of us have seen this

but what exactly is it?

Well, it is not this

or this

...anymore.

It is actually this

Confused?

Don’t worry let’s figure it out together.

Let’s go back in time to solve the mystery.

65 million years ago a dinosaur died

He might have died here

here...well before it was here

or many other places.

In order for the fossil to form, the dinosaur needed to die in a place where the body could be buried such as

The tar and mud would bury the dead animal

and slowly over time the skin and muscle tissue would rot

to leave behind harder elements such as

and

Water and rock like minerals slowly replaced the bone

so that now an exact copy of the bone remains.

Let's Watch...

Unit Objectives:

*Define fossilization

*Predict if organic material will become fossilized based on its location

*Interview at least one person who works with prehistoric remains

*Plan a presentation of our findings where you will prove how fossil records help tell the story of Earth’s history.

Let's get to work!
