After her chores, Funmi fetches her homework books down from her bedroom and into the living room. She starts with some business studies homework, working through a number of different worksheets. She also fills in numbers on a paper spreadsheet using different coloured pencils. At one point she goes through to the kitchen to ask her mum a question about the homework. Shortly afterward her mum heads off for her meeting and she says goodbye to Funmi and Funmi's brother as she leaves the house.
Funmi's next piece of homework involves watching a series of YouTube videos on learning Japanese recommended by her modern language teacher. Funmi has been doing a Japanese for the past year at school and is keen to watch the videos over the summer holidays in order to keep everything fresh in her memory. Whilst she watches the videos she writes down key phrases in both Romanji and Japanese script. She watches the videos on an iPad with her headphones on, resting it on her lap whilst she writes down the different phrases.
Funmi goes inside and begins to do some household chores, which include cleaning the stairs. Funmi's older brother comes downstairs and they briefly have a chat whilst Funmi continues cleaning the stairs.
Funmi's dad is currently away performing at a music festival abroad, and some of Funmi's other brothers have gone with him. This means that the house is a bit quieter than usual, particularly without Funmi's younger twin brothers who she helps to keep entertained. The brothers have also taken the Nintendo Wii with them and so Funmi isn't able to play her Wii games whilst they're away.
Funmi's mother and Liam sit in the garden whilst waiting for Funmi. After a few minutes Funmi comes downstairs with a red scarf wrapped around her head. Funmi's mother goes inside to prepare for work, and Funmi and Liam stay outside talking about the end of the school term. Funmi describes how her mock exams went okay, and how she did particularly well in business studies. She also tells Liam how she probably won't see many friends in person over the summer holiday, and will instead message them on WhatsApp on her mother's phone. On weekends and in the holidays, Funmi normally waits until after she has done some school work before messaging her friends.
Once she has finished watching a few of the Japanese YouTube videos, Funmi heads into the kitchen to make herself some lunch. She gets out a packet of instant noodles and places them in a bowl. She then puts the kettle on and, after it has boiled, pours the hot water over the noodles. Whilst she waits for the noodles to cool she tidies up the kitchen and vacuums the floor.
On the wall next to the kitchen is a schedule for her younger twin brothers, outlining different times for 'homework' and 'television' during term time. Funmi says that they don't use it as much in the holidays - instead the brothers spend most of their time running around and playing.
Back in the living room, Funmi puts down her bowl of noodles and briefly chats with Liam about a Nintendo DS game she is waiting to arrive in the post. It is a Legend of Zelda game, and Funmi has become a big fan of the Nintendo's Zelda series over the past year. She describes how she really enjoys how the Zelda series are all linked together by a unified time line, and she shows Liam a website that maps it all out (see

It's the first week of the summer holidays and the temperature is predicted to reach 28 degrees Celsius. When the researcher arrives at the house Funmi is still in bed and her mother describes how some of the family had been up till late the night before.
Funmi's mother calls upstairs to let Funmi know that the researcher (Liam) has arrived and then goes to do some vacuuming in the living room.

A Day in the Life of
This multimedia document represents a 'day in the life' of Funmi (aged 15 years) and was recorded on Thursday 24th July 2014. The day was recorded by a researcher as part of the 'Face 2 Face' project, using a range of sound, visual and written materials. Aliyah's name and other personal details about her life have been anonymised.
'Face 2 Face' is an ESRC funded research project (2013-14), jointly organised by the Universities of Sussex, Brighton and the Open University. You can find out more about the project here: http://blogs.sussex.ac.uk/everydaychildhoods/

Funmi
Funmi sits on the sofa with her bowl of noodles and a drink of fruit squash. She browses YouTube on the iPad and watches a video of her older brother's end of year prom, which has been recommended to her by a friend. Funmi's friend has told her that she'll spot lots of people she knows in the video. The video shows various young people in their late teens dressed up in suits and dresses as they get out of flash cars and limousines.
After watching the video and finishing her noodles, Funmi goes back into the kitchen to wash up her bowl and cup.

Funmi collects a bundle of knitting from the sofa in the living room. She has spent the last couple of weeks working on a soft purple scarf for herself. Whilst knitting, Funmi tells Liam how she first started it as a hobby in a primary school lunch club where she made 'gonks'. After the scarf she plans to work on a blanket for her younger cousin.
Funmi puts her headphones in again and browses YouTube for her favourite music videos from different Japanese anime series - in particular, the series 'Fairy Tails'.

After finishing her knitting, Funmi browses the internet on her iPad looking for videos of the Japanese anime series 'Naruto' (about a young ninja-in-training and his friends.) Liam asks Funmi if there is a connection between her love of anime series, the Zelda games and learning Japanese. Funmi agrees that she is quite into Japanese-related things at the moment. She says that watching the shows has helped her pick up the common pronunciation of certain Japanese words whilst learning the language.
Funmi continues to watch the videos for a further hour. The afternoon has turned extremely warm and Liam and Funmi agree to end the observation for the day.
Below you can find out more about Funmi by learning about some of her 'favourite things', including: the colours pink and purple, writing short stories and reading fantasy novels.
Funmi's favourite possession at the moment is a young adult fantasy novel called Teardrop by Lauren Kate. She's read the book a couple of times since getting it and plans to read it again. Funmi keeps bookmarks in the book so she can easily find her favourite passages:
Funmi's favourite object from her past is a door sign given to her by her uncle a couple of years ago as a Christmas present:
"It’s something that was meant to go on front of my bedroom door. I got it for Christmas from my uncle. It’s pink because, because it was my favourite colour. It says princess because I guess that’s how he thought of me. So I really cherish it, I think it’s really special."
"I read this book again, because I wanted to make sure that I actually understood what was going on [...] So I read it again a few days later, but it took me longer because, I’m not sure why it took my longer, but because it took me longer I could actually try and understand the story properly, [...] I could read deeper into and understand what actually was going on. So I read it twice and I actually think I’m going to read again"
Funmi's
Favourite Things
As well as being a voracious reader, Funmi has also attempted to write her own stories. However, sharing these stories with friends has had mixed results:
Pink was Funmi's favourite colour until recently - but it has now changed to purple. This is reflected in the changing colours of Funmi's bedroom where pink is still quite dominate:
"At school I used to go this creative writing club and used to write things and [...] take them home and write them up on the computer, and like we wrote, wrote some things, and I’d taken mine home and I was really proud of them, and I showed it to some of my friends, a few of my friends, and they said it was nice, so I showed it to some other friends and they didn’t really appreciate it so when I got home I just threw it in the bin."
"My favourite colour has changed to purple [...] I guess I started thinking, for me that pink was a boring colour, and a little bit girly, for me [...] My room, if I could change it, would probably be some sort of purple."

Methodology Moment: As Funmi spent much of the day listening to things through her headphones, the researcher was on the periphery of her 'sonic world' for the most part. This is also reflected in the ambient sound recordings that capture only snippets of the audio that Funmi listened to. Many of the YouTube videos are re-presented here in order that you can hear some of what Funmi was listening to.
