Her Big Break

Ella had a difficult childhood. Her
parents separated a month after she
was born. Her mother and her
moved to Yonkers, New York.
Sadly, a few years later, her mom
died and she moved in with her
aunt.

To help support herself
and her aunt, Ella
dropped out of school.
Dropping out of school
can get you into trouble,
and Ella found herself in
trouble. She was
arrested and sent to a
boarding school.

- Her ability to improvise almost like

an instrument.

- Many believe Ella had "perfect pitch" meaning she could hear exactly the right note to sing before singing it.

- Her huge singing range!

Dizzy Gillespie

American Icon

Not long after, Ella found herself
back in New York City. She
performed in a singing
competition at the famous Apollo
Theatre and won a $25 prize.
One of the musicians that played
at the Apollo thought she was
very talented, and asked her to
record herself.

In her lifetime, Ella recorded over 2000
songs that made over 200 records. Ella died
June 15, 1996 in Beverly Hills, CA.

She is considered to be one of the best
singers in American History.
