In the game of Chinese chess, there are sixteen
peices for each side. The general, two guards, two
elephants, two horses, two rooks, two cannons and
five pawns.
The General of Chinese chess is the
western equivilant of a king. Once
the general has been captured, you
lose. The General cannot go outside
the palace, and can only move vertical
or horizantally one space at a time.
There are two guards who are the
General's defence.they too cannot go
outside the palace. They only move on
their given diagonals.
On the red side, there are no Elephants, but
there are bishops. they move the same way
Elephants move, up two over two. These peices
cannot go over their side of the river.
The horse, the knight is the same in western chess. It moves up two, over one. this peice can go over the river. they can play offence, and defence.
These are the rooks. They are one
the more powerful peices. they can
go horizantal or virtical for as
long as they want. they can go over the river as well.
The cannon is like the rook. it
can move virtical or horizantal
for as many spaces as it wants.
to capture, it must go over a peice.
the cannon cannot go over two
peices to capture.
The soldiers are the pawns of Western chess.
they can only go forward one space until they
cross the river, then they can go sideways one
space. unlike western chess, soldiers don't have
to go diagonal to capture.
Chinese chess is much like western chess. The
object of the game is to capture the opponents'
king, or general. Red goes first, they can move
any piece on the board. Black goes second, going
by the same rules as red. each opponent exchanges
moves, until one player is in check mate, the official
term in which there is no possible move to save the
king or general. this marks the end of the game.
