What is a system?

A set of connected things or parts forming a complex whole.

Instructional Systems Design:

The ADDIE Model

Analysis Phase

ADDIE OVERVIEW

Instructional designers gather all the information they possibly can. Data gathered in this phase is put to use in every phase of ADDIE

Common tasks include:

  • Data Gathering
  • Development of Goals
  • Research of possible strategies
  • Determining needed resources
  • Obtaining sign-off.

The ADDIE model is a system instructional designers can use to build curriculum regardless of the instructional methods being used.

The ADDIE model consists of 5 phases:

Design Phase

In this phase, instructional designers blueprint learning using data gathered as well as knowledge of andragogy and pedagogy.

Common tasks include:

  • Drafting a design plan including:
  • Specific learning objectives
  • Course structure
  • Evaluation strategies
  • Deliverables.

Implementation

Development Phase

Evaluation

In the Development Phase designers start to see real progress as deliverables are produced, evaluated and re-designed.

Common tasks include:

  • Development of deliverables
  • Evaluation and revision (pilot testing).

If you are an instructor, you are likely already very familiar with the Implementation Phase. Content is finally delivered and evaluated.

Common tasks include:

  • Delivery of content to intended learners
  • Ongoing evaluation of the content.
  • Are learners meeting the learning objectives?

The evaluation phase encompasses every part of the ADDIE system. Before moving from one phase to another, the designer should step back and review work that has been done to find and fix errors and identify opportunities for improvement.
