Scripted Dialogue

First and final draft dialogue for older actors, Lewis and Ciara:

First draft dialogue for younger actors, Harry and Niamh:

After running lines again, just as we did with our younger actors, we performed the script how we thought it should be; we then asked our main director Beth to give us some constructive criticism and to say how she thought the scene should be played - all 3 of us then put ourselves into our director roles and imagined where we would be positioning the camera, from what angles and how the scene should begin, hwo it should roll through and how it should end, including proxemics, entrances and exits, camera shots and body language. We then produced a final draft of dialogue including stage directions and slightly different dialogue.

After watching Harry and Niamh perform the dialogue and stage directions, we stepped in to help them work on their proxemics between one another and their chemistry - we showed them how we would do it and then allowed them to put their on take on it. Harry and Niamh said that this helped them a lot; it also helped that we performed the section of dialogue as though we were filming several times. Working together in our group, me, Beth and Lewis came to the conclusion that the dialogue and stage directions were suited perfectly to the scene and the actors.

Harry: Big schools going to be scary...

Niamh: Yeah I know

Harry: But we can still be best friends right?

Niamh: Of course.

*Lewis is standing alone in location, the hut. Ciara enters from the right as Lewis turns around. The pair begin to hug.*

Lewis: I've missed you

Ciara: I've missed you to

*They let go of each other and stand awkwardly facing each other*

Lewis: Well, who is he?

Ciara: What? Look it doesn't matter who he is-

*Lewis interrupts*

Lewis: It matters to me, can we sort this out? Go back to how things were before you left?

*Lewis reaches for Ciara's hand and she pulls away*

Ciara: We can't just go back to the way things were, it's not that easy. I'm sorry.

*Lewis steps forward, hesitates on whether to kiss her or not, but instead leaves.*

Lewis: Who is he? Your boyfriend?

Ciara: What is it to you? It doesn't matter who he is

Lewis: I've missed you

Ciara: We can't just go back to the way we were, I'm sorry.

After running lines a couple of times with Harry and Niamh we asked them to perform the script how they think it should be, we had a lot of trust in the talent of our younger actors and after watching them work together independently they gave us a different perspective upon the script and they made us realise that it should be much simpler - we decided then to simplify the dialogue slightly and also add in some childlike traits, through stage directions, that Harry and Niamh had created between one another.

Final draft dialogue:

After performing our dialogue and taking into consideration the stage directions and script, we had perfected the scene; however we did feel that it could look a bit to 'staged' therefore we decided that when we were ready to film the section, we would use the script as guide lines to the scene - improvising around the lines and allowing one another to bounce off each other, as though we were a real couple in a real relationship. We felt that this would make the chemistry and overall scene appeal more real, adding to the childhood sweetheart element.

*Harry takes Niamhs hand*

Harry: Big schools going to be scary...

Niamh: Yeah...

*Niamh looks disheartened and Harry notices*

Harry: But we'll still be best friends!

Niamh: Yeah

*both actors smile, Niamh looks away shyly in a childlike manner*

Niamh: I made you this

*Niamh hands Harry a folded up piece of paper*

Harry: Thanks

Niamh: Anyway, I've gotta go. See you.

Harry: Okay, bye.

*Niamh exits. Harry opens the piece of paper to reveal a hand written later saying 'I love you', Harry then looks up, but away from camera, and smiles. Scene ends.*
