Participatory Culture
wow
David Gauntlett
Participatory culture is where individuals collaborate/contribute towards a product. this can be done by creating YouTube videos, fan-art online discussions on forums or social media such as Facebook or Twitter. This has become possible with the creation of Web 2.0; the internet can connect people from all across the world who share the same interests. This is also known as a fandom.
Web 2.0
Media convergence is using the old media with the new. For example gaming. We would use old media (TV) with the new media being the game console.
Technological convergence is still the idea of mixing the new and old media together. The use of a mobile phone being a multiple media platform is an example of technological convergence. The old media would be the idea of personal music player such as MP3’s then being used within the phone. There is no need for multiple devices anymore where we live in an era where media is now compact into smaller ones such as mobile phones.
Economic convergence is the horizontal integration of the entertainment industry. Sony now have interests in other media such as Films, Books, Games and Music.
This results in transmedia exploitation of branded properties. Now products will have multiple forms of media associated with the original product. Transmedia exploitation widens that market to a larger target audience.
Social convergence appears in our society, this involves using different types of media at once. Such as playing video game and listening to music at the same time. Also applies when listening to music and suffering the internet or reading a book.

This Xbox One screen grab shows the extent of convergence. We can play games, watch TV stream films and browse the internet all from the games console.

Video Games
David Gauntlett is a British Sociologist and media theorist. David's Idea of connection influenced our internet today, revolutionizing from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. He stated that "Making is Connecting - an inspirational call to recognize the relationship between encouraging creativity and fostering and engaged citizenry." An example of connection can be seen in modern games, especially Massive Multilayer Online Role Playing games (MMORPG) such as 'World Of Warcraft' or 'League Of Legends.' Now, people can connect with each other in real time and experience the game as a group. Before, games could be played together when the person was located (psychically) next to another player. Even though David has many unflattering angles, his idea of Web 2.0 revolutionized us into becoming more social through the screen instead.

David Buckingham
Long tail theory, coined by Chris Anderson, concerns the sales of a product over time. It states that at the highest point of the chart, the game is popular all at once. The slope, or tail, is where the popularity decreases over time. To succeed, products should cater for both the long tail of the market and the mainstream.
my crappy graph
Believes that young people have no fixed identity; they are all mashups of other people's opinions. They can always adapt to the mass of unavoidable, mainstream content rather than being their own human being.
Any game that allows Avatar creation fulfills Buckingham's ideas about no fixed identities.

Mainstream content is promoted more than niche products.
idk whose this is
Mainstream gaming forms the more generic and high revenue end of the scale. They still use traditional methods of distribution and have big marketing campaigns.
Digital Distribution has allowed indie games to have a wider and long release. Platforms like Steam make this possible.
