Experiment

  • Experiments must test your hypothesis
  • Experiments must be repeatable
  • Experiments come it 2 groups:
  • Experimental Group – tests the question/problem (manipulated/independent variable)
  • There will be only 1 independent variable
  • Changes are measured = responding/dependent variable
  • Control Group – used as a comparison to the experimental group

Results

  • An educated guess, predicting the answer to your question/problem
  • The hypothesis must be testable
  • Example:
  • Good – When the lid is off, water will leak out the hole.
  • Bad – I don’t know.

Hypothesis

  • Results are the data you collect from the experiment
  • Results must be very specific
  • Write down exactly what happened
  • Results do NOT include an explanation of what happened

1) Question/Problem

Conclusion

  • Conclusion is an explanation of what happened
  • Explain the results and compare them to your hypothesis
  • Scientists will often publish their work to share with the world, and to make sure they get credit for their discovery
  • Begin by observing a question/problem
  • The question/problem must be:
  • Specific
  • Testable
  • Example:
  • Good – Will water leak out of a bottle with a hole in it if the lid is off?
  • Bad – Why is art pretty?

The Scientific Method

The Method

Quick Write

  • Does hot chocolate help children grow?
  • Design a simple experiment to test your answer.
  • How many times should you run your experiment?
  • Question/Problem
  • Hypothesis
  • Experiment

  • Conclusion

Learning Goal 1, 3

Closure Quiz

  • How many independent variables does an experiment test?
  • Which variable is measured during the experiment?
