In this opening we show some of the social pressures teenagers experience, such as having party's, boyfriend's to maintain popularity. We explore this by showing the fight between Brad and Amber. Amber tries to hide her emotions, and this can show her character to be seen as brave and strong. Such as, in the mid close up of Amber closing the door when she tries to brush aside her feelings. This may connect with our target audience, as we also show her having a party at her house as we hear this through various music and sound effects, to highlight the pressures of a teenage life.
Amber's power is also emphasised by certain low angle shots, such as when she picks up her phone. This highlights her popularity and represents a certain teenage social group, where technology is typically shown as the center of most teenager's lives. Technology is also emphasised by the use of the text message effect, as it pops up on the screen, highlighting the importance of technology. representing teenager's as a certain social group who are consumed by technology.
'Continued to head the weekend charts for two weeks in November before losing the top spot for the remainder of the month to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the year’s top release by an independent distributor.'- BFI year book 2015
The Hunger Games series has been very popular with a strong female protagonist. We have also subverted stereotypes by presenting Amber as a strong female character and contradicted typical horror conventions, of the victim such as in Scream who is shown helpless and naive, as she has an ongoing conversation to her stranger on the phone.
Both gender's are revealed in our opening. Amber, is the main focus. Although, we do see a glimpse of Brad. Amber is shown as powerful, subverting stereotypes of young females typically portrayed as weak. We have shown this, when Amber pushes Brad out of the house, reversing the balance of power. Where men are traditionally depicted as controlling and powerful, such as in Scream where the young girl is forced to play a game on the phone. This is also shown, when Amber has decided to check the mysterious music upstairs and may show her as brave and fearless. Therefore, presenting young girls as powerful, despite the traditional stereotypes.
