Thank you!

Rowley focuses specifically on

the concept of wisdom as the ability to use accumulated information to interact critically with different situations.

Theoretical Basis

Rowley, J. (2007). The wisdom hierarchy: representations of the DIKW hierarchy. Journal of Information Science, 33(2), 163–180. https://doi.org/10.1177/0165551506070706

The DIKW system of information management, as described in Rowley (2006)

However, this level of

critical thought needs to be explicitly taught; teachers have the opportunity to encourage students to explore their own sense of ethics and apply them to relevant topics and current events.

Unlocking the New Curriculum for Parents

To accomplish this, teachers are encouraged to consider the Core Competencies in their lesson planning.

These may appear as:

social activities

critical thinking questions

student self-reflection

creative expression

or a variety of other forms.

Importance

Intention

The end goal of the new curriculum is to engage students with their learning in a way that encourages them to apply it outside of the classroom, in everyday life.

This is not as much of a stretch as it may sound, as long as topics can be linked to students' personal experiences!

As an educator in a world where information is widely accessible but potentially unreliable, my goal is to equip students with a set of tools to develop their own sense of ethics.

From this starting point, they will be empowered to interact critically with various sources of information in a way that furthers their ability to make sense of the rapidly changing world around them.

Concept

The new curriculum is designed to develop three Core Competencies:

Communication

Thinking

Personal and Social

Students will be supported in expanding these Competencies through age- and ability-appropriate learning content.

Organization

The BC Curriculum website will show each grade level's content organized into tiers:

- Big Ideas outline the major concepts addressed in a given school year

- Curricular Competencies describe the abilities students are expected to display by the end of the year

- Content lists specific subject matter students will become familiar with, based on their grade level

Interaction

Lesson content, guided by the Big Ideas, Curricular Competencies, and Content, provides opportunities to exercise students' grasp of the Core Competencies.
