3 small things to think about.

According to Genesis 3, the ground was cursed with thorns & thistles as a result of Man's Sin.

Thorns become a symbol of man's depravity.

In Song of Solomon 2.2, the Beloved is described as a "lily among the thorns."

Could this be a reference to Christ's future involvement in this world, amongst cursed men?

Christ was given a crown of thorns & then mocked.

John Donne described the significance of this event as follows:

But what Thy thorny crown gain'd, that give me,

A crown of glory, which doth flower always.

The ends crown our works, but Thou crown'st our ends,

In other words, by taking on this Crown of Thorns, Jesus symbolically took on the Curse of Man. Christ, in turn, leaves Man free of the burden of His Sin.
