What does Pink say about Stories?
Mini Sagas
Mini sagas are super short stories that consist of exactly 50 words, no more and no less.
They have a begging a middle and an end. Our job was to each write our own.
What is YOUR story?
Story vs Fact
- We remember stories more than we remember facts
- Stories are how we remember
“Humans are not ideally set up to understand logic; they are ideally set up to understand stories”. – Roger C. Schank, cognitive scientist
Fact: Baseball is my favorite sport.
Story: At the age of 4, I went to my first baseball game ever with my dad, and I have loved it ever since.
The Story Business
From 'A Whole New Mind' :
"If a businessperson understands that his or her own mind naturally wants to frame experience in a story, the key to moving the audience is not to resist this impulse but to embrace it."
"Like design, [Story] is becoming a key way for individuals and entrepreneurs to distinguish their goods and services in a crowded marketplace.'
The Story of Healing
It is estimated that story accounts for half of advertising campaigns, thus making it a trillion dollar industry.
- Dr. Rita Charan is a Columbia University Medical school professor who is trying to heal with stories. She discovered that patients explained their aliments in narratives. Doctors repeated stories of their own and illness unfolded as a narrative.
- Students at Columbia now take a seminar in narrative medicine where they learn to listen empathetically to the stories their patcients tell and to “read” the stories with greater acuity.
“Stories-that’s how people make sense of what’s happening to them when they get sick. They tell stories about themselves. Our ability as doctors to treat and heal is bound u in our ability to accurately perceive a patient story. If you can’t do that, you’re working with one hand tied behind your back.” – Dr. Howard Brody
Story -
"WE ARE OUR STORIES. We compress years of experience, thought, and emotion into a few compact narratives that we convey to others and tell to ourselves."
Puppy
I have always told my dad that I wanted a puppy. Each year on my birthday I would beg and plead for a cute little dog. “Pets are too much responsibility.” He said. Today I turned eighteen, woke up and went downstairs. There was a small dog waiting for me.
Hunter
He had to kill to survive or let himself starve by letting his opponent escape. The hunter did not like what he did, but he never truly had a say in the matter. Holding his rifle in his hand he prepared to fire, he knew what he had to do.
Lion
A big lion is growling. I have to stay here quietly. I am sweating a lot. It is just a few minutes, but I feel like this moment will last forever. Finally the school bell rang. I closed my books, packed my bag and quickly went to the restaurant.
Fluffy
There once was a puppy named Fluffy. He played games with his puppy friends in the yard. One day, Fluffy was chasing his ball as it rolled down the street. Hours went by and Fluffy never came back. Finally, Fluffy was found as he rode in a truck back home.
Grownup
I remember as a child my dad always told me that time flies. I never really knew what he meant. But in the blink of an eye I’m already graduating. My friends who I used to play in the sandbox with are now young adults with me. Now I understand.
We each have our own unique own stories. Some are happy while others are sad. But all of our stories are reflections of times in our life that created who we are today. So what’s your story?
