Japan’s Ridiculous Decision Enraging Koreans (05-04-2011)
Despite all the chaos and catastrophic events continue to swallow the land of the rising sun, Tokyo decided to take a firm stance in its territorial claim on Korea’s easternmost islets. Sources report that the Japanese government has given the go sign on restating Dokdo islets as its territory in school textbooks. The decision has provoked Koreans once again while Seoul is continuing to send aid supplies to the quake stricken neighbor.
The Seoul government decided to respond by viewing the two as separate issues. It has confirmed to continue humanitarian aid to Japan while pushing for stern actions against Japan’s continuous claims over Dokdo.
Currently, Japan has a list of territorial disputes to solve. For starters, Japan is in dispute with Russia over the Kuril Islands, and it has engaged in the debate with China over Diaoyu. The Japanese education ministry recently announced the results of its annual review of history, geography and various middle school textbooks. In the textbooks Japan stressed sovereignty over all disputed territories.
Even with the change of government in 2009, Japan is maintaining its hardheaded position on territorial issues.
The rise of the liberal Democratic Party of Japan after 54 years of uninterrupted rule by the conservative Liberal Democratic Party made many Koreans hope Tokyo may shift its stance on the claim over Dokdo.
“The government has decided to act sternly and strictly toward Japan’s unlawful territorial claim in its textbooks,” the spokesman of Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said. On the other hand, government officials stated that Korea will be sending more aid supplies to parts of Japan heavily devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.
