the perils of living in the information age

When information in plentiful,

knowledge becomes scarce.

Information is not knowledge.

To truly know something, you must

focus on it in order to internalize it and graft it into your existing understandings.

This process is personal, challenging and requires self discipline and focus.

In a world of personalized media, information at your fingertips and hyper-connectivity, concepts like self discipline and focus are considered old fashioned.

Education, in a desperate attempt to appear with-the-times, adopts educational technology without understanding what it is and enters into the race for attention by chasing engagement.

In the meantime, society is struggling to come to terms with a digital information revolution. Teens are so inured to connectivity and their own personal media consumption that they are virtually unteachable in a standard school setting, let alone when given access to the very connectivity they are addicted to.

External information is not known. You cannot develop complex skills from external information.
