STD Lesson 1

Why?

Youth as a group are more likely to:

Engage in unprotected sex

Have more than one sex partner

Youth

Sexually active youth have the highest STD rates of any age group in the US.

Each year, 9 million new cases of STD’s occur among young people ages 15-24. By age 25, ½ of all sexually active youth get an STD.

People of Color

African American, Hispanic people have disproportionately higher poverty rates, less likely to have necessary health insurance & access to medical care for prevention & treatment.

Genital Herpes: African Americans infection rates 3 times higher than whites. Even with same number of sexual partners, still higher risk.

Mrs. Lotter- FHS Health

Women

STD’s more easily passed from men to women than vice versa (higher rates of infection)

Changes in cervix due to puberty make more vulnerable

Many asymptomatic (no early signs/symptoms) as a result they go undetected & untreated until complications arise

Untreated complications more serious in females

infertility, tubal pregnancy, chronic pain, cervical cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

STD infected Pregnancy- greater risk of miscarriage, premature delivery. Can transmit infection to baby.

The Good News?

Did you Know?

At Risk

Anyone who is sexually active

People of Color

STD's ARE preventable!

Basic Facts

STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Infections) are acquired through sexual activity.

Infections can be:

Bacterial (Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis) CURABLE

Parasitic (Trichomoniasis, Pubic Lice)

Viral (The H’s… Herpes, HPV, HIV, Hepatitis B NON CURABLE

Some are centuries old.. others newer. More than 25 infectious organisms now. As more are identified, # of STD’s continue to expand.

The US has the highest rate of any country in the industrialized world.

19 million new cases each year, more than half of all people will be infected with an STD at some point in lifetime.

The surest way to avoid? Practice Abstinence= Don't have sex!

20 Million new STD's occur each year.

Some groups are disproportionally affected by STD's

Including: Adolescents and young adults

1 out of every 4 sexually active teens has an STI,

and 1 in 2 sexually active youth

will contract an STI by age 25.

Other ways?

Why is it important to learn about STI's?

Get tested & treated

Use condoms

Leading Strategies

Abstinence

Consistent and Correct Condom Use

Microbicides (gels, films, or suppositories that can kill or neutralize viruses and bacteria)

Vaccines

Media Coverage (non-stigmatizing, medically accurate and offers resources for further education).

Innovative ways to educate

Access to and quality clinical services

Sexual health behavior research

Get vaccinated

Reduce number of sex partners

Reduce risk behaviors

Helps one to be able to take care of one's own body

Help us recognize myths like, "It's easy to tell if a person has a STI because they will look sick" that could prevent a person from using effective prevention methods or seeking needed treatments.

Untreated STI's can jeopardize a person's health and future ability to have children.

It helps a person be able to discuss STI's with a partner.

STD’s

Why do STD’s Spread?

Many underestimate RISK. Recent survey: only 14% of men and 8% of women think they are at risk for infection.

Due to underestimation of risk and many STD’s are SILENT in the early stages, many people do not get TESTED and inadvertently pass the infection to others.

Lack of STD AWARENESS (health care providers discussing?) along with STIGMA, SECRECY and SHAME.

Stopping the Spread of STD’s

Early screening and diagnosis (Testing)

Treatment

An infection passed from one person to another during sexual intercourse or by skin-to-skin sexual contact.

This includes:

  • penis to vagina (vaginal sex)
  • penis or vulva to mouth (oral sex)
  • penis to anus (anal sex)

STI is a new term, as many are infections that can be treated.

More than 25 different infections have

been identified.
