Five Classifications of Volcanoes

Stratovolcano

  • Also known as a composite cone
  • Built up from alternate layers of lava and ash
  • Form where you have ocean crust meeting continental crust.

Shield Volcano

  • Broad, Shallow cone
  • Layers of lava
  • Hot spots have shield volcanoes

Cinder Cone

  • Cone-shaped piles of tephra.
  • Throws out lava and ash into the air.
  • Divergent zones tend to have them in rift valleys

Caldera

  • Usually collapes in on a stratovolcano or a hot spot.
  • Can be up to 62 miles wide.
  • An older volcano with a large crater

Lava Dome

  • Forms inside a previously erupted volcano.
  • Lava domes up and cools inside an old volcano.
