Example Online Lesson

Pi Day - 3.14 (March 14)

Objective: Students will discover the mathematic importance of (pi), and enjoy some activities related to pi.

1. Two-by-Two: Have 2 digits of pi written clearly on index cards and shuffle. Hand out to students and have them silently rearrange to form about 70 digits of pi.

2. Use prior knowledge to discuss the definition of pi as the relationship between the circumference and diameter of all circles.

3. Show You Tube video: "What pi sounds like" A person appoints a note to each digit in pi, and creates a symphony of melodies from this.

4. Relive pi: Recreate methods used by Archimedes to calculate pi.

5. Art actvity - Make a pi chain (each digit represents a number, and students make a chain), OR have a pie eating contest, or hula hoop contest.

6. Share and enjoy eating pie with the class.

Drawbacks

What is the downside to using Online Resources?

  • May use a website that requires a fee to use an account, or constantly solicit/advertise.
  • Some resources are teacher or student made, which may be incorrect or not align exactly to teacher needs.
  • Technology resources may not be readily available, ie. computers, tablets, internet connection.

Kahn Academy - Math lessons that can be used by teachers to supplement, or by students to view lessons and track their progress.

Estimation 180 - a fun website built by a math teacher to give practice on estimation. Can be used as a warm-up.

  • Students or class submit their estimation into a google doc form to compare guesses.

Who takes classes online?

  • 1,816,400 "distance-education" enrollments in K-12 school districts during the school year 2009-2010
  • 29 states and Washington, DC have statewide full-time online schools as of 2013-2014
  • 310,000 full-time online students as of 2012-2013. Up from 200,000 full-time online students in 2009-2010.
  • In 2006 Michigan became the first state to require online learning for high school graduation
