She acted in her ‘Uncle Jack’s’ plays with him such as ‘Richard Carvel’, ‘The Tyranny of Tears’, ‘Cricket on the Hearth’ and ‘The Rivals.’ She was very open with her uncle and demanded the same respect that her whole family and other actors would receive.

The Barrymore family were most definitely amongst this elite group that received a large fan base and critical acclaim. Theater managers started using the same actors over and over again as well.

According to Bordwell and Thompson, “in 1911, the first fan magazine, The Motion Picture Story Magazine, appeared” (page 31). Films didn’t start using credits and actors as a form of advertisement until 1914.

In early Hollywood, before 1908, actors were never credited for their work and were simply just players. This was done partly so that actors wouldn’t ask for higher wages.

Although Georgie Drew Mendum often played a supporting role to those around her, she believed that all actors are good-natured. She recounts her positive experiences playing with actresses Clara Bloodgood and Annie Russell in a Chicago newspaper.

She referred to Annie as ‘the sweetest little thing in the world’

John Drew worked as an actors and theater manager. He didn’t have quite the career as his soon to be family but he participated in plays such as Canterbury of Livingston and The Progrist.

Lionel Barrymore

Lionel Barrymore, also a prominent stage actor, created a name for himself in the plays Peter Ibbetson (1917), The Copperhead (1918), and The Jest (1919).

John Barrymore

John Barrymore was also a stage actor and is most famous for his starring roles in Shakespearean Places such as Hamlet and Richard III

Ethel Barrymore

Ethel Barrymore who has the reputation of being the best actress of her reputation was a high regarded film and theater actress. She was in A Doll’s House, Romeo and Juliet, The School for Scandal, The Corn is Green and many, many more.
