Motivating Students

with Technology

...and on a personal note

I want to motivate my students more and pledge to use more classroom technology!

And...if I have a question I will ask it immediately!

  • We know today's students are becoming more and more "gagetized" and use technology a great deal outside of school
  • It keeps them interested and engaged
  • Provides frequent interaction and feedback
  • Access to real world experts
  • Helps you reach different types of learners
  • Assess students using quick and effective methods

Of course...it has to be done in the right way.

Things of the past

  • PowerPoint Presentations
  • Only lecturing and writing on the board
  • Teaching from only one source, like the textbook
  • Having students type up a paper or make a PowerPoint on a topic and calling it "technology integration"

What's "In"

  • Interactive, student centered lessons using technology
  • Blogs, Wikis, Social Networking
  • Student created videos, podcasts, and virtual collages
  • Twitter, online conferences, and PLN's
  • Sharing resources, copying ideas, and getting feedback from other educators around the world

But making your lessons more tech integrated is hard...

"I don't have time to learn lots of new things"

Don't try to overhaul your classroom in one day.

Learn one thing, add one thing, find one thing each week/month/quarter.

"I'm not very tech savvy."

Don't worry, you're not the only one.

There are literally thousands of resources for teachers just like you.

If you find one that you don't understand, try another.

And there are lots of reasons why you don't do more, right?

"I don't know where to look, or even where to start."

"Activate your fans, don’t just collect them like baseball cards." -Jay Baer

Imagine if you could collect a hundred or so teachers in a room from all over the world.

They teach the same subjects you do, the same grade level, and maybe even the exact same lessons at times.

They have experience, tech knowledge, all the resources you could imagine, and they are just waiting for you to ask questions.

When you ask them a question someone answers right away. Actually, several of them answer.

And not only do they give you help and advice, but they point you in the right direction. You get links, videos, documents, all right in front of you.

This is called...

Your Personal Learning Network

Or, PLN for short.

...and it really will exist if you want it to.

Just take a look at part of my PLN.

What I've Done With My PLN

  • Asked LOTS of questions

  • Recieved even more answers

  • Shared my own resources and success stories

  • Discussed issues and relevant education topics

  • Connected more personally with a few teachers to create lessons where both of our classes work together

  • Found out about, and attended a completely online education conference with educators from all over the world

How can you get started?

Try these 5 simple steps

  • Get a Twitter account
  • "Follow" someone you know
  • Look at who they follow, and follow more
  • Learn the basic lingo and etiquette: Retweet, Hashtags, etc.
  • Ask a question, answer a question, and start connecting

But don't forget...

  • Don't try to accomplish setting up your PLN during one planning period

  • Give yourself a couple dedicated times each day for working on it at first

  • If it doesn't seem to be helpful, keep making those connections, eventually your network will expand...and so will your knowledge

  • Once you have a strong network, you don't need to check it every day or even be very connected with it. Use it when you are stuck or when you are looking for a specific resource.

  • Ask for help if you get confused don't give up!

What are our learning targets today?

  • I can identify the need for using a Personal Learning Network to acquire classroom resources.

  • I can easily navigate SMART Notebook software.
