In academic writing, you should try to avoid progressive tenses (i.e., those that end in –ing) in favor of either (1) present simple or (2) present perfect verb tenses:
BAD (Progressive tense):
Many applications, such as DVD players and streaming Internet video, ARE USING variable bit rate compressed video streams.
BETTER (present simple tense):
Many applications, such as DVD players and streaming Internet video, USE variable bit rate compressed video streams.
