'CONDEMNED'

A psychological thriller opening

Condemned is a pyschological thriller, that is about a boy who is obssesed with seeking revenge on his friend's killer. The opening sequence consists of four frames.

• Frame 1 is a flashback of the two friends, a boy and a girl. The audience are able to get a feel of a happy jolly atmosphere, and are introduced to the characters. This shot is created in black and white, to emphasis it being a flashback, in the past.
• Frame 2 cross-cuts to the present time, which is of a boy sitting alone on the streets, looking through his diary, touching a photo of a girl. In his diary, we are able to see writing and scribbling.
• Frame 3 is another flashback of the girl grown up, but dying. The boy is by her side, shaking her trying to keep her alive. It also shows shots of the girl drinking something, and suddenly collapsing. This suggest she has been poisoned.
• Frame 4 is cross-cuts back to the boy on the streets. The shots show close-ups of him crossing people's photo's out, writing notes under the images. His face expression is quite tensed and anxious.

The opening scene consists of two characters. A boy and a girl.

The boy is the main character in the sequence. He is a psycho, and quite disturbed . He is about 18 years of age and does not have many friends. He becomes pyschiotic when his friend(the girl) is poisoned. He dresses quite rough and scruffy.

The girl only appears in two flashback frames. She is very pretty, and soon becomes a popular outsider. In the sequence of the opening scene, she is portrayed to be quite a jolly person.

The setting of frames 2 and 4 will be shot on the streets. The road will be deserted.

The setting of frame 1 will be done in a park, with the girl and boy sitting on swings. Frame 3 will be shot in a garden, where there is a party taking place.

'Mise-en-scene'

• The lighting in most of the sequence will fairly low and dim. This will in effect create shadows.

• The boy will dress up in a hooded top and joggers. He will not wear bright colours, so that he camouflages in with the scene and setting.
• The girl in the frame 1 will be dressed in a dress. In frame 3 she is dressed in party clothes.

• The area where the shoot will take place will be deserted, emphasisng the feeling of empytness.

Frame 1 is a flashback. It will be shown in black and white, to emphasise that the event to place in the past.

Frame 3 will be created in a sepia colour. It will be slightly blurry.

Camerawork

Narrative

There will be no narrative or dialogue in the sequence.

Sound

The will be quiet, eerie music in the background. It will also be quite sharp. In frames 2 and 4, we will be able to hear the heavy breathing coming from the boy. The flashbacks in the distance will not be very clear, sort of echoing.

Titles

The titles will come in between shots. They willappear on black backgrounds.

Theme

The film is a psychological thriller. It explores themes such as revenge, obsession, violence and mystery.

Characters

The Action

Most of the shots in the opening sequence will occur quite quick and pacey, to create tension and suspence. The shots in frame one would be longshots and mid shots, enabling the audience to get a feel of the surroundings and what the characters look like. The shots of the boy in frames 2 and 4, would consist of over-shoulder shots, to leave the audience wondering who the character is. There would also be mid-shots, to show the setting. Close-ups would be used to focus on his actions, when he is crossing out the images. Some of the shots will be quite blurry to make the audience feel apprehensive.
