What does service learning mean to you?
- Service learning is a symbiotic relationship that benefits both the community and the participant.
The National Research Council
identifies service learning as one
of the most effective strategies for
improving student engagement
and academic learning.
- Service learning can be incorporated into classroom curriculum.
Wondering how your class can get involved?
6 Steps to Incorporating Service Learning into Your Classroom:
Consider: Step 1: How will service learning complement learning outcomes for your course?
•What learning outcomes should students master for the course?
- What methods will you use to achieve these outcomes?
•Which of these outcomes is best achieved through service learning activities?
Step 2: How does the combination of service and academic content contribute to achieving the learning outcomes?
- How often and for how long will students engage in service?
- What resources will complement the service?
- What reflection activities will you implement?
Step 3: Establish community connections.
- What community organization partnerships will be most helpful?
- Who will be responsible for opening and maintaining the lines of communication?
- What are the organization's needs regarding skills and manpower?
Step 4: How will the service learning program be evaluated?
- How will you gauge student learning?
- How often will you assess student learning?
- How will the community organization evaluate the event?
Step 5: Develop a syllabus.
- Present the draft syllabus to community partner and revise as necessary.
- Include service learning information regarding student responsibility, service experience assessment, student reflection, and resources.
Step 6: Prepare to manage the process.
- Have you addressed professionalism, transportation, safety?
- What campus resources are available to you and your class?
