At the old people's home

(9th graders)

Some of the 9th graders of our school went to an elderly people’s home in Espoo to keep company for the old people.

First they had a quiz about general knowledge about teenagers and their habits and so on. Then the students read newspapers to the old people, or played board games with them. Then they played a word explanation game with them. There were one student and one oldster in each team. Apparently they had a fun day!

Saint lucy's day on the 13th of december

In Finland, every year for one day, St. Lucy comes to give some light to the darkest days of winter. Mostly St. Lucy is celebrated in Scandinavia, and called Lucia. Lucia wears white clothes, red fabric belt and crown or wreath of candles on her head.

This year Finland’s Lucia was Vanessa Eriksson. She got chosen by voting. Voting was made with Folkhälsan and newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet.

In our school I was Lucia. With a few other girls and boys I sang to our school’s students. Then they got gingerbreads and maybe that’s why they enjoyed it so much.

-It felt good.

Christmas at Vanttila: spreading light and joy to others!

Before Christmas, students brought their old toys and other things from home. Then they wrapped them and gave them to salvation army's christmas pot. Those things go to families or lonely people who need help. The students were enthusiastic and happy to help other people who don't have money to everything. They wanted to do something similar this year too.

Singing at the old people's home (7th graders)

Our 7th graders went to sing at an elderly people’s home.

And we asked them these questions:

1. How did the old people feel about the visit?

They were very thankful, very happy and satisfied.

2. What was it like to sing for them?

It was fun.

3. Did you get a reward for it?

Yes, they gave 350 € to our class!

4. Did you choose what you sing?

Yes, we did.

5. What did you sing?

We sang the Finnish songs Kulkuset,

Joulumaa and Petteri Punakuono.

EXCHANGING GIFTS

Many of the pupils exchanged gifts (recycled things like books).

I interviewed some students from lower grades about a gift exchange day.It was a day when students in the school switched gifts with each other. For example the students I interviewed gave books and different kinds of plush toys like bunnies. And in exchange they got books and things like that. Also some of the grades gave the gifts to charity. The students seemed to like it a lot so maybe we will do it again and maybe it will become a tradition in our school.
