Things you've probably learned so far:

  • How to Beg, Borrow, and Steal
  • The people around you are really weird
  • Making art can take a looong time, and can be frustrating
  • Following directions exactly does not ensure beautiful art
  • "I think I see a cat" = instant success

Things you can take with you after this class:

  • Your own Tumblr account (and others' too)
  • A sketchbook to reference techniques/colors and principles/elements of design
  • You probably made 1 or 2 works of art you actually like
  • You understand how to use colors!

Things I didn't attempt to teach because it's not part of this class:

(and plenty of other people teach this so...)

  • Painting Techniques
  • What IS art?
  • How do I draw something realistically?
  • How do I clearly communicate an idea through design?
  • How do I balance my checkbook and organize my time?

Why "Pursuing you Dreams" is difficult and more important:

  • It is important to be reminded that you don't have a career, you have a life, and what is the quality of that life?
  • In our American culture what do we mean by "success"?
  • Jobs will make you bored, tired and grouchy, having a creative outlet relieves you as a basic human necessity.

To do lists, goals, strategic planning, and my "stuck" list.

Fear-based decisions usually end badly.

"Art World?" there are many art worlds...

Why art? Why now?

(why does my art deserve to exist?)

(do you work better with people? on your own?)

Do we all agree on the definition of happiness?

(flow) (no expectations)

(don't compare yourself to others)

How do we keep ourselves challenged?

(Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts

and never hope more than you work.) - Rita Mae Brown

What skills are helpful?

My stuck list

1. get AWAY from the internet. Away...

2. Take the pressure off of the imagination

A little bit of pleasure... then a little bit more...

3. Have you checked/made your to-do list for today?

4. Suck it up and just clean up after yourself.

5. Some of your best work comes from wasting time artistically!

6. Make food for the next 2 days

7. Call a friend to hang out (use it as an excuse to dress up)

8. Go somewhere via your bike

9. Write a thank you / a note reminding a friend that it has come to your attention that a mutual forgetfulness about the friendship has occurred and can and needs to be corrected.

10. Go 100% in the wrong direction, hit bottom

11. Caffeine

Sell your art in galleries

  • See Neil Gaiman's tips for getting freelance work...

  • Be as opinionated as possible (have conviction), but embrace admitting when you're wrong.

(And also, be able to deal with uncertainty.)

  • Develop clear writing or speaking to persuade people to help you or figure out how to get people to help you write/present yourself better.

(you've paid for school, and supplies and spent some time thinking/making this work...)

Cost of materials + Hourly Wage + Importance of the work to your overall practice = Price

How to not lose money when you sell your art:

With a gallery? Price X 2

In New York? Price X 2 X 3

Minimum Total Price = $180

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs could use an adjustment,

a creative outlet IS a basic need, it's just harder to recognize.

200 dollars worth of supplies to make 10 paintings = $20

framing your artwork = $80

5 hours @ 10 dollars an hour = $50 (so far we're at $150)

I like the work (but it's not the first/last of a series) = Add 20% (times 1.2) = $30

(If you know the work is really important to your practice Add 50 - 500%)

With a gallery? = $360

In New York? = $1,080

Cost of materials + Hourly Wage + Importance of the work to your overall practice = Price
