The 2nd scene

Change in soundtrack, but a repeat of the ghosting effect; the 2nd scene is intended to develop the viewers' understanding (confirming the murder) but still provides no clues about the overall storyline...

The ghosting effect is used in combination with the lack of eyes in the next shot, to not entirely reveal the identity of the only character shown so far; this is intended to draw in the audience, who will want to know the character's identity

The burial

The use of the sand is very effective, the footprints it creates and the cinematography of the arm being buried in the sand are very powerful; illuding to the act of murder (like the scream) but not clarifying it.

Black and white

The effect of having a very defined black and white background, as well as the colourless titles; is that it creates a unique traditional feel. This firstly can be seen as something which creates an aged murder-mystery type theme, but as this is usually uncommon nowadays- it is likely (it is intended) to intreage the audience.

Opening establishing shots

Zoe's Scream

The establishing shots continue the mysterious theme aimed to confuse but draw in the reader. The blur effect gives the audience a very limited flash of the coastline, making them try hard to identify the location. The shot of Bamburgh castle is striking and imposing, but does still not reveal an awful lot to the viewer.

Greenapple

Very thankful Zoe did this, as it interrupts the background music abruptly, hopefully catching the viewer out- making them confused and susceptible to the eerie atmosphere- which is being built.

An understated believable name, which is intended not catch the viewers attention greatly; due to the sharp, confusing beginning.

Film4

Film4 as the distributor was an easy choice due its history of successful, but artistic British films; it also has a history of launching the careers of directors such as Danny Boyle.
