The Allies Turn the Tide

In 1942 the Allies were in trouble; The Germans were advancing, and bombing Britain.

Governments Increase Power

  • United States and Britain increase Govermental Power
  • Held war bond drives
  • Japenese lost their jobs, homes, and civil rights in the United States and Canada.
  • Britain did the against German refugees.

Women in the War

  • Women around the world took over jobs, as men went to war.
  • American and British women served in the armed forces.

The "Big Three"

  • Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin agreed to end the war in Europe, before starting in Asia
  • The big three distrusted each other. Churchill and Roosevelt thought Stalin wanted to control Europe.
  • Stalin believed the West wanted to end Communism.

The Allies Forge Ahead

  • 1942-1943 was the turning point of the war.
  • Allies won victories on four fronts.
  • Japan was beaten at the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942
  • This Allied victory was followed by a bigger win at the Battle of Midway in June 1942

Allies Advance

  • With North Africa under control, the Allies advanced.
  • Landing in Italy, they defeated Italian forces in about a month.
  • Hitler then sent help to Mussolini, after the Italians overthrough him.
  • Hitler was in trouble after spreading himself thin
  • Sent troops to Stalingrad. The battle that followed was one of the most costly in the war.
  • German commander surrendered in January 1943

D-DAY

  • June 6, 1944
  • 156,000 troops broke through German defenses, and advance toward Paris.
  • Under pressure from all sides the Germans retreated.
  • August 25th the Allies entered Paris, in less than a month, all of France was free.

Advance Continues

  • Germany losing war
  • Germans were being pelted with bombs around the clock.
  • After freeing France, the Allies headed to Germany.
  • The Battle of the Bulge; lasted more than a month, both sides lost huge amounts of soliders.
