Grade 6-8 (Ages 11-14)
For this performance indicator my middle school class can collaboratively create a Welcome to Middle School Video for new incoming students that will inform them all about the school. Each group will be assigned a different aspect of the school. For example, one group may be assigned the school factuality in which they will interview teachers and the administration, another group can be assigned extracurricular activities and cover all the sports and activities that are available after school. Each group will record their aspect of the school and then edit all the footage together into one cohesive video about the school.
At the beginning of the school year students can be required to create an introduction presentation to tell the class about themselves. They will be instructed to create a power point presentation including a scanned photo of themselves, or their families, graphics for their favorite subject in school and a link to a website that is related to one of their hobbies. Students will also include a video clip in the power point as well. By doing this, the students will create a presentation using different file types. If the classroom or school is equipped with computers, students can create the presentation in class so the teacher can further explain the different file types the students are using. Students will present their presentation to the class in one or two minutes.
Students can be assigned to create a community health survey online using Google Forms. They can ask health related questions post the survey online. Students can create business cards with the website that accesses their survey and hand it out to the public. Once the students have enough surveys completed they can put the information they’ve gathered into an Excel Spreadsheet to further analyze the data. Once students determine which areas of health needs to be focused on and put together a campaign to promote better health within the community using the information from their surveys.
To fulfill this performance indictor, students can be paired up in twos and required to research a current event that will be posted on a class blog. Once students have completed their posts, they will be required to review all other current event posts and write three relevant questions in response to their classmates’ posts. This will create a cooperative learning project regarding current events in an online environment.
