Why are we leaving the Earth?

In the future, a huge asteroid the size of North America hurtles towards Earth. There is no way to stop it, slow it down, or change its course. It will slam into earth and destroy the entire planet.

In hopes to save humanity, the world leaders decided to put together a team of elite individuals to build a rocket, and explore space, searching for a habitable planet for the human race...

These are the people who shall

leave Earth to find a new habitable planet, and save humanity.

Hi I'm from Gering,Nebraska my name is Iziah Blanco. I like to play sports and my favorite sports

team is the oakland raiders.I have 2 brothers

my younger brother Aden and my older brother

Jonathan my job on the spaceship would be

the rocket engineer.

Hunter Swilling

Hello, I am Hunter Swilling and I am from Cheyenne, Wyoming. I like to read and my favorite genre of book is non-fiction. I have read a book about the universe and the galaxies future and how the galaxy works and how the future is predicted to go. I am going into 8th grade and I am looking forward to it. My job on the ship is the astrobiologist and main scientist.

Joseph Hajba

HI, Im from Big Piney Wyoming.

I love to play sports and build

robots. In 2011-2012 I went to a

world final robotics competion in

St. Louis. I have a little brother named Jackson.

And I have my parents who are very supportive and

awesome. My job on the spaceship is chief engineer

HAYDEN JOHNSON

Hi, I'm Hayden, but you can call me Heyday.

I'm from Lander, Wyoming, and I am a Chargers fanatic. I play basketball, baseball, and most sports. I run for my school cross country team, and ski for the cross country skiing team. My favorite color is red, and my favorite soda is Squirt. I have two brothers, one younger and one older, and a golden retriever named buddy. My parents are also very supportive and epic. When I grow up I would like to be an architect. This camp was special because I plan to go to The University of Wyoming. On our space ship, I will be the doctor.

Jason Sigda

Hi, I'm Jason. I'm from Fort Collins, Colorado I love math and science. I joined this camp because I love space and am always eager to learn more. I have been in several STEM camps and two robotics camps, and I am aways willing to learn more. My job on the spaceship will be the mechanic and the tech.

Caeden Grubb

Hi. My name is Caeden Grubb. I am from Green River, WY. I love to hike, play basketball and soccer, and most of all play video games. Some people may say video games do nothing for you, but believe me I am getting a serious workout, for my thumbs anyway. My favorite color is black and on our spaceship I would be the ''Minster of Defense'', [as Hayden calls it] just in case of aliens or if Death Star shows up.

JORDAN TURNER

My name is Jordan and I study astronomy

and physics. I like to eat lots of food, watch

Star Trek and talk about science. My favorite word is turd and I like to write. I am going

to be the captain of the ship.

The destination for our epic space journey is a star that is known to have a habitable planet called Gliese 581c. It has an oxygen-nitrogen-carbon atmosphere, and gravity similar to the destroyed Earth. The planet is thought to have no intelligent life, but some simple organisms and many different types of plants. The star the that the planet orbits is a type G star, according to the spectrum of the star and the planet is well within the habitable zone.

Habitable planet characteristics

Many variables go into human survival on an alien landscape. Water, food, plants to replenish oxygen, and a strong atmosphere. These are needed to sustain human life on a planet other than earth.

There are many options to test for life on other planets, like sending probes to test for oxygen and other life forms by taking soil samples to check for protein, starches, and bacterial growth.

A biosphere is a self-sustaining ecosystem that is closed off from the rest of the world. If a biosphere is necessary, than we will build one prior to the mission out of glass and steel beams. We would have plants, animals, and their habitats. Our system would have to recycle all of our resources. We hope to, however, find a planet that is able to support life

How do we get there?

In order to make it to a distant planet, you would need to consider many components. One of such would be the amount of oxygen that we would need. According to our math and experimental data, we would need an absolute minimum of 30,000 liters of oxygen per day.To solve this problem, we would construct our ship in the image of a biosphere, filled with plants to replenish and recycle our oxygen.

Another such problem would be

water purification. To solve this

problem, we would need to

construct a filter to cleanse and

and recycle our water. We

constructed water purification

systems at this camp, and the most

successful filter was made of

coffee filters, sand, rocks, and

Iodine soaked cotton balls.

The sand, coffee filters, and rocks

help to take out the larger objects

in the water, while the Iodine

cotton balls kill bacteria that may

be in the water

Yet another problem we would face on our interstellar journey would be keeping a balanced diet. We cannot allow unhealthy eating habits or wasting food on our space adventure. To do this, we could change our diet prior to the mission, to get used to the somewhat strange eating in space.

Space Vehicles

During camp we made paper rockets. The farthest rocket, made by Joe, went 47 meters, Caeden's went 45 meters, Iziah's went 27, Hayden's and Jason's went 26 meters, and Hunter's went 29.6 meters.

Some of the variables that affected the distance of the rockets were the number of fins, the weight of the rocket, the shape of the rocket, and the number of pumps.

MARS LANDER

To land on our planet, we would need a durable lander to deliver us to the surface of our planet. During camp we also made mars landers. We had a $100 budget to make a lander that would safely land after a drop from two meters, with a quarter as a pilot.

Upon Entry....

On entry to the planets atmosphere, the nuclear reactor that was our engine equivalent, spontaneously combusted, causing everyone to die except for Hunter. He is, of course, a boy, which means that humanity is doomed.

How Earth would appear after the asteroid

Thank You counselors, teachers, Exxon Mobil, and Dr. Harris for this wonderful camp!!!!!!!!!
