Analysis of The Ring

Conventions of The Ring

Frame 8

Frame 9

Frame 1

We are then presented with an extreme close up shot of the same characters face. This is to show the characters emotions, creating tension for the viewer. This scene is also presented as quite dark, this adds more fear and mystery into the shot.

  • Damsels in distress

The opening scene presents us with two characters, one being more worried than the other. This is very stereotypical of horror films to make female characters more vulnerable.

  • Use of darkness

Darkness to used a lot in the opening scene to this film, this creates a tense atmosphere. Also creates a sense of 'the fear of the unknown'.

The final frame is of a long shot which shows the viewer what the character is looking at. The camera pans around the door frame which is used to mirror the action of the character. This scene is building to a climax which has followed from the anti climax.

This is an establishing shot which shows the front view of the house. This has been used to show the viewer the surroundings and where the film has been set. Only one room has lights switched on which shows that characters are present. This could also show that the main action is going to take place in this room. The way that this scene is dark, could imply something scary is going to happen.

Frame 2

Frame 7

Here is a long shot. This shot is used to show the characters full body, usually to shot their costumes. They have used this shot, showing the phone that is ringing and the characters that are coming closer to the phone. The characters are in a narrow corridor, this creates a tense atmosphere. There is a clever use of lighting in this frame. The light is coming from the left side of the characters (as we look at them) to create dark shadows over their eyes, making it hard to distinguish the characters' facial features.

  • Groups splitting up.

The two characters split up towards the end of the scene, this makes each character far more vulnerable.

  • Sound effects.

There are many sound effects used in this film. The telephone ringing and the 'fuzz' of the television make the atmosphere very eerie. The 'natural' background sounds make the opening scene feel realistic and is shows how this could happen to anyone.

This is a mid shot of the two characters sat, looking bored towards what you later find out to be the television. It's quite dark on the right hand side of the viewer and the only source of light seems to be the bedside lamp. The darker side is nearest the window. This highlights the vulnerability the further away from the centre of their house they get. The light coming from the left is further away from the window, representing the warmness and safety of the house. The characters are also discussing television, which suggests to the viewer that the television will play a big part in the film.

Here we are presented with a mid shot. In this shot we can see the character suddenly stop as she turns to walk away from the scene, we are shown the blue glow of the t.v in the other room. The characters actions creates a tense atmosphere and makes the viewer question what is about to happen.

Frame 5

Frame 3

Here is an over the shoulder shot showing the conversation of the two characters. This shot is used so the viewer can focus on the character who is speaking. The shot is also close up, as the character is telling the 'scary story' the camera zooms in onto her face. This creates a very tense atmosphere.

In this scene, its showing a close up of the time. at this point the phone rang and the camera zoomed in fast to the clock which mirrored the characters action. we think that the producers did this to show that it was late and it was the starting point to the beginning of an anti climax.

Frame 4

This is a sequence shot which is used whilst the characters are in conversation. This is used so the viewer can see both characters facial expressions rather than just the speaker. This is also a close up shot which emphasis's her reaction to what the other character has just said.
