Ophelia

Ophelia's Initial Character

Beautiful

Dependent

Innocent

Sweet

When saying dependent, I mean that she relies on men to tell her what to do, and how to do it.

"No, my good lord. But as you did command

I did repel his fetters and denied

His access to me."

This quote exemplifies Ophelia's obedience to her father, eventhough it meant denying her love.

New Characteristics

Insane

Unpredictable

MAD

In previous scenes that Ophelia has appeared in, her main motivation is to please her father. In every scene she does nothing for herself, only for him.

Whereas, In this scene she has no one to tell her waht to do.

One of the biggest questions raised in this scene is, “Are you mad?” Ophelia’s entire attitude has changed drastically. Another question that is raised in this scene is, “What is the reason for your haunting songs?” Her haunting songs proves her insanity, she is beginning to speak the way that Hamlet has been doing throughout the entire play. Also, “Why is your anger directed toward Gertrude and Claudius?” We are forced to wonder whether she knows that Hamlet is responsible for the death of her father, or is she just blinded by her love of Hamlet.

One question that is answered that I previously had, “Is Ophelia able to function without the guidance of her father?” It is proven in this scene that she is not able to do so, because her previous short and straight to the point lines, that were scripted by her father, have turned into long, drawn-out, and babbling lines, that truly have no meaning, but insanity.

Ophelia is important to the act, because her character brings another level of suspence. Her insanity leads the story to another tragic pause in the play where all actions of other characters are focused on one character.

You can tell that from the clip Ophelia, is very confused about the events that are happening.

The character Gertrude, is very afraid of the reaction of Ophelia. She is suprised. She doesn't know what to do, but when Ophelia leaves the room she decides to follow. I believe that it could be Gertrude's motherly nature showing.
