The imaginative use of credits are very effective as it is overlayed on an old book. The signifier of the book is that the genre has tones of mystery and detective, as a person's hands are flicking through the book very drastically, a signifier that something urgently has to be discovered or understood.

The close up of the pendulum is a signifier for the rhythm of a heart heat,setting the fast pace for the frightening genre of the film. Ticking noises or chimes are also typical signifier's in thriller and horror films.

The medium shot of the man in the bed sets the tone of the eery mise en scene in the film. The darkness in the far end of the room is a signifier for the unknown and creates the impression that he may not be alone. The focus on the dim light is creepy as it only lights up half of the room.

A extreme close up on gruesome fingernails and chapped fingers. The sharp razor used to scrape the skin off represents pain and sets the tone of the thriller genre. This creates an uncomfortable viewing as the content is quite graphic.
