Objectives:

1. To achieve technical proficiency of the body, demonstrated by the ability to reproduce and produce a variety of movement sequences with accuracy and clarity.

2. To achieve greater performing skills, demonstrated by the ability to present sequences with artistry and musicality, expressively and with personal interpretation.

3. To deepen the understanding of the importance of dance and the arts, especially as it relates to the students personally

4. To learn about and appreciate the importance of dance throughout history and within other cultures.

5. To be able to act intuitively and creatively in improvisations and in utilizing choreographic tools.

6. To perform in PDC’s dance concert.

7. To be able to critique professional dances utilizing the terms learned in class.

Homework Policy

  • Homework must be turned in on the due date.
  • Late homework will be accepted being deducted 10% per class day.
  • Tests/assignments missed due to EXCUSED absences must be made up within two class periods.
  • If an assignment is due and the student is absent that day, it must be turned in on his/her return. Do not miss to avoid taking a test/turning in work! There are no make-up points for truancy.

Daily Participation Point Deductions:

-25 Absent

-5 Not dressed, chewing gum, hair not back

-5 Tardy or leaving early

-1-10 Lack of participation, bad attitude, disrespect for rules, etc.

Dance 1

PARTICIPATION

CLASS RULES

  • TARDY 5 minutes to change
  • After 20 minutes, counted absent.
  • Tardies = -5 participation pts.
  • Students may not be permitted to participate if late due to possible injury.

ATTENDANCE

  • Physical class = physical attendance and participation!
  • Do not miss, especially with group projects and choreography.
  • absent = 0 participation points! If you are too ill to participate, you are too ill to come.
  • One may sit out and take a full page of notes once a semester. If you do not use your sit out day, it will be rewarded as 25 pts extra credit at the end of the semester.

1. Show Respect for the teacher, the studio, your peers and yourself. 2. Be Ready to dance by being early, dressed and leaving everything else in the locker room. 3. Wait until the teacher has dismissed you. You have 5 minutes before the end of class to change. 4. Cell phones OK if deposited in "phone box." Unauthorized use = confiscated.

5. No swearing or "C" words ("I Can't!")

6. Always do your best, try something new, and learn something new every day.

Course Description

Dance in education is taught to increase your understanding of the human body, creativity & aesthetics, technique, performance, and much more. Together we will build self-esteem, learn self-discipline and become excellent problem solvers – both individually and collectively. Students will increase their technique, skills, and knowledge in preparation for advancement into a higher level dance class or company. This class will perform in the Performing Dance Company’s dance concert.

FEES

ABSENCES

A towel and lock fee was charged to students at the time of registration. Lost locks are $5.00. Students were also charged for costumes (rental), choreography, etc.

Students will be expected to attend one outside professional dance concert per semester. There may be provided opportunities for field trips to attend a concert at a discounted price.

Absences/Sick Note/School Excused/Make-Up

-Lone Peak High School’s Attendance Policy applies.

-You must make up all participation points, even If an absence may be made up through the Attendance School, (If you are not present, you do not receive points for being present.)

-All work, assignments, and notes missed while absent must be learned and completed on time.

-It is the student’s responsibility, not the teacher’s to find out what was missed.

-School Excused Absences/field trips must be handed in and approved of the teacher before the date of departure (these points will be added back in at the end of each term).

-For extreme cases of sickness and other emergencies, the teacher must have a valid note. Absent/Tardy notes signed by a parent are to be taken to the Attendance Office, not the teacher.

-Up to 3 days worth of participation points per semester may be made up for excused absences. Unexcused absences/truancy cannot be made up for participation point . . . it is best not to miss!!! Make-up work is available upon request for severe circumstances.

Dance Disclaimer Because of the physical nature of the discipline, some appropriate tactile corrections may be made by the instructor to better facilitate understanding and correct placement.

Dance Attire

Winter Dance Concert Performance:

Due: two calendar weeks after performance

Make Up: Due: two class periods after absence

Fridays: "Fitted Black THridays" and Journals Due

Items required and forgotten = points lost.

Items NOT permitted will be confiscated.

End Semester

Bring:

  • Dance Clothes and Hair Tie
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Notebook/Binder (Dance Journal)
  • Socks and Layers (optional)
  • Water Bottle (optional)

Dress Code

  • stretchy, form-fitting dance clothes (not street clothes)
  • no shoes/socks (unless told to)
  • pants that can be rolled up (no slip)

Ladies:

  • wear sports bras under clothes
  • all tops must cover the midriff
  • tops must have 1" strap
  • no jewelry
  • hair pulled back and out of eyes
  • shorts must be longer length, or tights must be worn under

Men:

  • sweat or athletic pants
  • compression shorts under pants
  • tank top of t-shirt

Participation points will be deducted for not wearing the appropriate attire.

Dancer may not be allowed to participate.
