Film Noire

The product was a two minute production following the

conventions of film noire. However before we could make our product we had to think of our audience, and who our audience is?

Finding the right audience

is very important for your film.

If you have a film that is very dramatic and edgy,

you shouldn't aim it at young children

You would aim the film "Happy Feet"

at a young age group

Not at a elderly

male group

We decided to aim our product at a 15 age classification. Mainly because of violence, however the storyline is for a mature audience and needs concentration to understand, we felt that a younger audience would struggle to understand.

The antagonist was dressed in a hoodie and mask to hide his identity to give him the element of mystery

Cinematography

Below is a print screen from a group members blog with link to blog.

What is Cinematography?

Cinematography is the making of lighting and camera choices when recording photographic images for the cinema. It is closely related to the art of still photography.

What is the role of the cinematographer?

In the film industry, the cinematographer is responsible for the technical aspects of the images such as lighting, lens choices, composition, exposure, filtration, film selection. The cinematographers are the heads of the camera, grip and lighting crew on a set, and for this reason they are often called directors of photography.

How is cinematography useful to me?

Its important that i have basic knowledge about cinematography because when making out opening title scene we need to consider; lighting, camera angles etc.

Taken from Jamie Reeves media blog (http://jamiesasmediablog.blogspot.com/2010/01/cinematography.html)

By adding a twist to the story and showing it in the OTS can leave the audience asking questions and wanting to see more.

Otherways we would attract our audience would be by ways of advertising. the cheapest and most effective would be internet virals, the more expensive would be newspaper and magazine advertising

The typical film noire genre focuses on shadow, we followed this by making our film black and white, this is the most common and typical convention of film noire.

To our OTS we added extra wind over the top of the action by doing so we could create suspence also mystery.

Before we began our main task we were given a continuity task. We had a morning to film a simple sequence which involved walking to one side of a room and hold a conversation.

This helped us understand what was needed for our main task, and how much thought had to go in whilst filming. The small continuity task was to record a 45 second piece whereas the main task was up to two and a half minutes.

We began to realise that continuity was much more difficult than we first thought, 1 wrong foot could damage the whole film.

This gave us enough experience for our main task, we could experiment with a greater variety of camera angles.

As we are media students we had very little if any capital. This means we were limited to what we could do, with location, actors and props.

Big conglomerates own lots of capital, as well as their own cinemas, editing suits and studios

As we are media students to get our film across to any audience the best place to exhibit would be the internet, sites like youtube are accessable online and are free also you can get a wide range of feedback

As I have already got media experience this year was all about expanding on what I already knew.

After filming we uploaded all of our footage onto Macs, and used a video editing program called iMovie HD

However while filming we had to think about lighting, in the same way a photographer has to. This could make it easier when we came to the editing process.

For our location we had to make sure it was a place that we could all reach easily. This way we could all make sure that we could put our ideas into the filming and not cause arguments later on.

Target Audiences

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Audiences

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My Project

A 2 minute production

following the conventions of...

Who would be your audience

for your media product?

Small independant studios have very little capital and locations are very low key, also unknown actors are more than likely to be used.

Looking back at you preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from strat to the full product?

Our media product was a two minute opening title sequence or OTS for short.

How does your product represent Particular social groups?

How did you attract/address your audience

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

The main hook to our product is that there is an unexpected twist in our story.

One a storyline was in place we began to create the characters around that. The main protagonist was a man who had drink problems as well as money problems. His attire was a casual black shirt with jeans, this shows that he has class but he could of worn them over a period of days.

We broke conventions with our main character, by he was being played by a young actor who had drink and money problems, we as an audience do ont expect this of a young person and the audience wants to know what happens to him.
