Adam lay i-bounden (from A Ceremony of Carols) - Benjamin Britten
Difficulty:
Description: ABAB1A1, features some imitation (at the unison), mixed meter, light Latin, rapid dynamic changes and accents, large leaps.
Pedagogical Value: This is a great introduction to advanced repertoire. The work introduces some new musical concepts (new harmonic language, accents and rapid dynamic change, canon) without being physically difficult to sing. Plosive consonants allow for minute diction work. Also a good opportunity to practice count-singing.
I Wonder as I Wander - arr. Richard Lloyd
Difficulty:
Description: Formally AAA1A. Predominantly unison, but the third verse has a very high descant, more dissonant than the “Away in a Manger” descant.
Pedagogical Value: The descant is challenging. This piece is great for breath control because it features long phrases which are just short enough for a child to do in one good breath, without stagger breathing. There are some sudden dynamic movements.
Hamilton's Children's Choir
Mary and Joseph - Keith Bissel
Difficulty:
Description: 2-part, slow, binary form.
Pedagogical Value: slow melismas on "aw" vowel make a good introduction to non-syllabic singing. Hard consonant endings on offbeats need attention - ideal for everybody snapping on cutoffs. Triadic leap movement - good for developing flexibility. Large downward leaps.

The Monotone Angel - Don McAfee
Difficulty:
Description: 3-part, verse/chorus form, homophonic, mixed meter. English with Latin interspersed.
Pedagogical Value: homophonic splits are done in 2nd-inversion triads – tuning of triads, fourths. Mixed meter is a good opportunity for count-singing. Introduction to Latin text and vowel shapes. Has a sustained diminuendo on a mid-range note - practice of dynamics with breath control.

Repertoire Selections
Away in a Manger - arr. Marie Pooler
Difficulty:
Description: 2 voices, three formal sections (AAA), Key of F. Lower voice stays in the range of c-C; upper voice has a high F. Lower voice is always the melody, upper voice is an easy descant in thirds and sixths.
Pedagogical Value: Range extension up to high F. F is the worst key for tuning; good opportunity to work on tuning consonant intervals.
Circa 1996
"The children have appeared on television, [and] have produced three audio tapes. The choir has...traveled thrice to the Maritimes and once to France on concert tours."
