After returning with his father to Geneva, Victor marries Elizabeth but is worried that the monster is going to kill him on his wedding night. For her protection, Victor sends Elizabeth inside as he awaits the monster. He then hears Elizabeth scream and finds his new bride dead. Victor's father dies from grief a short time later.

Victor encounters Robert Walton, the captain of a north-bound ship, as he is found dog sledding in a weaken state searching for his creation. Victor tells the tale of how is monstrous creation came to be.

When Victor is found he is in an ill state and eventually worsens, dying shortly after. When Walton returns to Victor's body a few days later, he sees the monster weeping over Victor. The creature then departs to the northernmost ice to die.

Victor spends months creating a creature fashioned from old body parts. He is able to bring the creature to life but is horrified by the monstrous being. Victor abandons the monster and soon falls ill from the traumatic event.

Victor enters the university of Ingolstadt with his friend Henry Clerval joining soon after. Victor studies natural philosophy and chemistry and is determined to discover the secret of life.

Victor discards the the remains of this second creation in the river and upon his return to an unknown town he is arrested. He is tried for the murder of his friend Henry who was found with hand marks around his neck. Victor is acquitted of the crime but falls ill again.

One night while he is debating the morality of his actions, Victor sees the monster watching him out the window. Horrified by the consequences of his actions, he destroys his new creation. The monster vows revenge and swears to be with Victor on his wedding night.

Victor tracks the monster northward into the ice. In a dog drawn race, he almost catches the monster but is separated from him when the ice breaks, generating a giant gap between them. Victor is then discovered by Robert and the narrative returns to the present.

Victor describes how his parents met and his early life in Geneva. He talks of his adopted sister Elizabeth Lavenza and the blissful childhood they spent together.

Victor receives a letter that his youngest brother William was murdered. He returns home, catching a glimpse of the monster during his travel. Victor knows that the monster is the one who murdered his brother yet Justine, a young girl adopted by the Frankenstein house hold, was condemned and found guilty.

Grief stricken, Victor travels to the mountains where he is approached by his monster. The creature admits to the murder but pleads for understanding. The being asks Victor to create him create another creature, one as grotesque as he, to serve as his mate.
