New Media

Rhizomatic in many ways. Firstly, the order that Tweets come in is user defined.

Many Tweets are entry points to information, contributing to the idea of multiple entry points.

Chapter 3 In Brief

Twitter

Social networks represent different demographics.

  • A higher percentage of lower income students are on MySpace.
  • MySpace is more culturally diverse (This is important for minority recruitment)

Social networks are “growing up” currently, where as Twitter is growing down

  • Particularly Facebook, which is growing in the 40-60 year old demographic

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.

University police use Twitter and Facebook to keep students more informed

Traditional recruitment is defined by Finnegan/Webb/Morris as "contacts by college admission professionals in visits to high schools, visits to campus by high school students and their parents, college fairs, targeted yield events, telephone calls from institutiaonl representatives, and pritned borcures or viewbooks."

Communication

Ideas

Using New Media to engage perspective students and their families. Successful integration will allow easy access to information via rhizomatic narrative construction.

Reading Statistics

nobody reads anymore

More than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level - far below the level needed to earn a living wage.

15% of all 4th graders read no faster than 74 words per minute, a pace at which it would be difficult to keep track of ideas as they are developing within the sentence and across the page.

50 % of American adults are unable to read an eighth grade level book.

44 million adults in the U.S. can't read well enough to read a simple story to a child.

Nearly half of America's adults are poor readers, or "functionally illiterate." They can't carry out simply tasks like balancing check books, reading drug labels or writing essays for a job.

Most of you are not reading the words on the screen right now.

46% of American adults cannot understand the label on their prescription medicine.

73% of books in libraries never checked out?

The average reader spends about 1/6th of the time they spend reading actually rereading words.

Wouldn't we become part of the problem?

Annotations web videos together like websites. Strategically, annotations are best used when the video is displaying related content. This can be used to predict the thoughts of the user and provide a path to the information that they may require at that key point in time. If the user does not want the related information, he or she can do nothing and the annotation will disappear. This allows the user to define their information gathering expierence.

annotations are hyperlinks

that pop up in the video itself.

Live interaction is possible VIA ustream.tv, qik.com, justin.tv, etc.

Other sites can host pre-recorded videos such as YouTube.

Video Hosting

Web 1.0

-Bob Bassett, dean of Chapman's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts

we are living in a time when 3rd party websites are in many was as important as our University homepages.

Annotations and related content tools allow for hypertext to be embedded into the video frame creating possibilities for rhizomatic narrative. Just as entire blogs do not need to be read, entire videos no longer need to be watched. Students are able to self select the information that is significant to them at a given time.

According to Jeff Jarvis, a TV critic who blogs (and vlogs) at BuzzMachine, "Vlogging lets us online go up against our true competitors -- not news organizations and reporters but commentators, especially on TV (on Sunday morning, on Fox, on 60 Minutes). Bloggers compete with columnists; vloggers compete with pundits."

University

Websites

Default narrative structure is reverse chronological, but access to each post can be user defined.

Hypertext can send users to the blog, as well as away from the blog.

Metadata allows users to land on blogs from search engines, much like hash tags in micro blogs.

Blogs can include media such as pictures, video hosting services, and widgets.
