Steve Neale argues that pleasures derived from ‘repetition and difference’; there would be no pleasure without difference. We may derive pleasure from observing how the conventions of the genre are manipulated. We may also enjoy the stretching of a genre in new directions and the consequent shifting of our expectations.
Using Steve Neale theory of there being difference within a genre itself to attract the audience more, I found a perfect example of the movie Gone Baby Gone, directed by Ben Affleck. Which is a movie about a private detective, who is hired to solve the kidnapping of a little girl. Although it sounds like the typical thriller, the trailer suggests that the story will be a lot different to what is expected. I have also watched this movie for myself and saw how this is not your typical thriller. Furthermore the success of this movie, winning 23 awards, shows this theory is correct in many ways.
Its extremely important to take into account the Genre of a movie when producing the trailer. Mainly because a trailer is there to attract people to watch this movie, and more so attract their target audience. This may result in people not watching the movie, as it doesn’t seem there type.
Daniel Chandler states: Conventional definitions of genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content (such as themes or setting) and/or (including structure and style) which are shared by the texts which are regarded as belonging to them.
Rick Altman argues that genres are usually defined in terms of media language (semantic elements) and codes (in the western, for example: guns, horses, landscape, characters or even stars, like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood) or certain ideologies and narratives (syntactic elements). This theory helps me in the content of my trailer, this I because through his theory of codes, its helps me to understand the Mise-en-scene of my own trailer, and also all the other elements I need to include in my trailer so the audience understand what Genre my movie is.
It is important to take into account all of these theorists when creating my own movie trailer, as I have to specifically show what Genre my movie falls into. Also, these show how I will need to look at what I include in my video as, I do not want to confuse the target audience I am aiming at. More so it is important to give my audience something different as Steve Neale states, difference within one genre may help to attract the audience a great deal more.
