Tomatoes are native to South America. Spanish expolorer may have been the first to transfer the small yellow tomato to Europe.
In Bulgaria tomatoes were brought by Bulgarian gardeners who worked abroad in XVII century. About 1890 tomatoes were grown in the village of Kurtovo Konare. Bulgarian tomatoes are famous for their good taste.
The country of potatoes is South America. In Europe for the first time potatoes were brought in Spain in the second part of XVI century.
Bulgaria is one of last European countries where potatoes were brought. In Bulgaria people started to grow potatoes in 1825. Bulgarian gardeners brought potatoes from Romania in Lyaskovetz. Ten years later potatoes were brought from Serbia and Greece in Samokov.
Tobacco culture was brought to the Balkan peninsual by Italian merchants probably at the end of the nineteenth century. Many investigations lead to the conclusion that the cultivation of
tobacco came from the south, moving northward along
the valley of the Struma. The first center of tobacco
production was at Dupnitza, whence it expanded to other parts of Bulgaria. IN Bulgaria are found the factors necessary for growing of high-grade tobacco.
