Simpler Rock Cycle

Igneous Rocks

Igneous: These rocks are any rock that was melted (So Neat!) and then cooled. It’s hard to imagine rock melting, but rocks get hot enough they melt! When these melted rocks cool they become hard again. This process repeats itself over and over again.

Three Main Types of Rocks...

The End

Just remember the three types of rocks igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. And don't forget how useful rocks are today!

You can use them to build...

You can paint on them..

You can climb on them...

Why Rocks are so much FUN...

Metamorphic Rock

Pictures

Sedimentary Rock Pictures

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic: These are rocks that have been heated up and squashed at the same time. It looks like Play-doh when you have two colors and you have squashed them together.

Sedimentary Rocks

Rock Cycle

The three main types, or classes, of rock are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and the differences among them have to do with how they are formed. Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material. Together, all these particles are called sediment.

Sedimentary: These rocks are made up of smaller rocks that have been squashed together. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Sandstone is a bunch of little pieces of sand stuck together. Sometimes Sedimentary rocks looks like rocks stuck in another rock like this picture.

Rocking Out

Rocks have only 3 main types; Sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. If you understand these three types of rocks you can know the history of any rock you come across.

Igneous: These rocks are any rock that was melted (that’s right! melted rock!) and then cooled. It’s hard to imagine rock melting, but rocks get hot enough they melt! When these melted rocks cool they become hard again.

Sedimentary: These rocks are made up of smaller rocks that have been squashed together. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Sandstone is a bunch of little pieces of sand stuck together. Sometimes Sedimentary rocks looks like rocks stuck in another rock like this picture.

Metamorphic: These are rocks that have been heated up and squashed at the same time. It looks like Play-doh when you have two colors and you have squashed them together.

All the smaller rocks you see are broken off of larger rocks or cliffs. So the rocks you find outside are either sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous and are broken off from larger rocks.

How do you sort rocks?

Color: What color is the rock? You could put all the dark rocks in a pile and put all the lighter rocks in a pile, but this is not the only way you can sort rocks.

Hardness: Did you know some rocks are so soft you can scratch them with your fingernail? If you have some rocks that are soft and some that are hard. You can sort rocks by their hardness.

Texture: Some rocks feel soft and smooth like chalk, while others feel hard and scratchy like sandstone. You can also sort rocks this way

Type: Now that you know sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks you can sort them by their type. You can put all the metamorphic rocks together and put the sedimentary and igneous in their pile.
